I come across a guy who is parting out a 442 and he wants $1400 for the 2004R transmission, drive shaft and 8.5 open rear with 3.73 gears.... Good deal??? what would/should this combo run?? He is located 6 hours from me and just getting opinions before I would commit to buy and travel that far...

Thanks in advance!!

what year is the 442 and how will you know if the valve body in the transmission is the original one

How many miles are on the stuff? Obviously the rear axle is the most valuable piece, but since it's an "open" geared unit, that hurts it value wise.

I'd say the asking price is top dollar. I'd negotiate from there. Under $1000 would be better. Realistically, there is a select few people who even know what the stuff is and would put any value on it other than current scrap rates.

EDIT: I originally thought the engine was included too. I think $500 would be a better offer.

I would definitely want more info before I drove six hrs to see about it.

Open gets you about $500 deeper if you want it to become a posi. I'd give $6-800 if it looked straight and I could tell it had 3.73.

Trans is special if it is the KZ or OZ I would want a pic of the tag and the understanding that I was going to pull the pan to verify the vb and Gov before I handed over any money. Even then tops for me would be $400 if the fluid looked good and there was a converter that looked to be the one that came with it.
Drive shaft, meh, he could throw it in if he wanted to. I wouldn't care either way.

If you have that kind of money, don't waste your money or driving tie on that garbage. That 200R is ancient, the 8.5" is overpriced and so are the parts for it.... just no. Buy a 9" and 4l80E. Both will handle your HP and get you good gas mileage.

There's some jerkoff in Cali asking $1700 for a stock "Rare GN 8.5"". Annoying when people say it's a rare 8.5" GN rear like they forgot they came on 84 - 87 T-Types, 84 - 87 GNs, 84 - 87 442s, and 84 Olds Hurst.

Plenty of better options for $1400
