I have just purchased a 454 (77 GMC Truck motor) and dropping it into my 1986 Monte Carlo SS, problem is.... there never was a 454 in a G-Body SS. So I am looking for anyone who knows or has done it to help me out with the info on what headers I can use with out to much pain!
Hell, if you have some for sell, drop me a line!

Search and ye shall find...

Hooker makes a set of Supercomps that bolt right into the G-body pt# hok-2241hkr in the Summit cat. I used them on my 79 El Camino with out any problems. You may want to spend the extra $$ and get them coated.

Good luck with the swap

Steve

hedman headers and hooker headers

i am doing the same project with a ls5 454. the differance is that i pulled the motor from a g body car so i saw the way the headers worked. they are a 2 piece header that one of the center tube on the driver side comes from the motor loops around the steering shaft and slips back into the header back down by the frame. it is a unique set up but that motor sits in tight thats the way to go with long tube headers.
with you truck motor you probably have a oval port head so be sure to get the right headers. there is a oval port head and the square port that is usually a high horse head. just do your research and check you casting numbers to see what you have. i personally hit the jackpot with my motor. i bought the car for $100.00 and was all excited till i started talking to some friends who race and the kinda had me down talking about the different motors that i could have had. so i checked the casting numbers and found out it was a 1971 ls5 motor which is just about the best news i ever could have found.
good luck !!!

So have you ran into any other special needs yet? Will the motor mounts match up? Thanks for the info! I guess I will be buying the $400 headers then.... WOW!

???

i have not gotten that far yet im still gathering parts like a transmission that is going to hold together when 450 hp and 500 ft lbs are attacking it . but i did measure the mounts and the were in the same place as my stock 305h.o. ss mounts are. i pulled the motor from a 1981 elcamino that has seen better days

i have the coated hooker 2241 headers and i love them, best fit headers for the money on a big block swap. yes you reuse your original 305 motor mounts, you do need to trim part of the mount that attaches to the block on the drivers side for clearance. but other than that. its a good fit.

The biggest problem on a big block swap is the fact that the stock 7.5" rear axle will not last long or at all behind a big block. either buy a 9" ford axle or the gm 8.5 from a gn.

Richmond Gear has a new street/strip 5spd thats rated for 600 ft. lbs!! I spoke with 2 reps. n told them I'm dropping in a 496cid in my 81 Boo & will be around 600hp & 600ft lbs torque. He said it'll hold up with no problem because G Body cars are so light. A friend of mine has their 4spd in his 69 Nova with a 509cid. Look into it. After all, real race cars have 3 pedals!
