455 block i guess just wondering what these casting are and what the engine is the block casting is...896021F and the vin diritive is 36M331918 if anyone can tell me what it is or is from would be great thanks in advance jesse

That should read 396021F, which is a '68-''71 block

36M331918=
The 3 means Oldsmobile.
The 6 is incorrect, it should be an 8, 9, 0, or 1.
M is the plant where it was built.
The last 6-digits coincide with the original cars VIN.

The "6" means that it is a 1976 block, as corroborated by the oil fill tube unit number. The casting number is more likely an FA and the "A" just wasn't seen. Either that or it's an early block that's been restamped, which is highly unlikely. I've got $10 that says the heads are "J" heads.

es actually it does have j heads on it or did so is it worth even bothering building it?

No, not at all. Put it at the curb and I'll come remove it for you.

Seriously, it's fine. The block is the same casting used on all 455s, as is the crank and rods. The pistons are low compression with large dishes. It's up to you if you want to spring for new pistons or not. The J heads are smoggers and have the lowest-flowing ports of any Olds heads, but they respond to porting just as well as any others. In stock form they are acceptable for a street-driven cruiser. Ported they will flow with any other ported Olds heads. Up to you as to what your build plans and budget are.

yea gettin some work done on it very soon just picked up a set of G heads the other day so the Junk J heads have been upgraded to large paper weights
