Not sure if I'm putting this in the right area. My dad is currently rebuilding the 455 Olds block in his 87' cutlass. He has always been plagued with fuel starvation problems. He is looking around trying to find a good in-tank pump or mechanical pump. He says he's done with out of tank electric fuel pumps because he still had starvation problems with them and they make that obnoxious noise lol. He won't be racing much really just a cruiser with the random trip to the track. Also just to add he has a/c in the car, not sure if that adds to the starvation problem. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
You can get used tank from an 84 to 87 Buick Grand National or Ttype and or from a 4.3 tbi monte carlo or get a new one as listed on ebay. If you get a new fuel tank you also need the hanger. www.racetronix.com look under fuel pumps for Buick GN/Ttype as they are as close to plug n play as possible. You will need a return style fuel pressure regulator if you are using a carburetor such as the Malory 4309 as seen at Jegs or Summit sites. You can also get an inexpensive roll of fuel line there for the return to the tank. Lastly I used a fuel filter from an early 90 350 TBI Camaro available for cheap at any auto parts store.
Now you have a system that is cheaper & easier than the typical setup useing a sump or cell. Its also quiet, the pump lives a normal life like a new car, its safe from being rear ended unlike a typical out of tank mounted between the tank & bumper and your fuel to the carb is cool from the tank. Last time I did it I mounted the fuel pressure regular on the frame at the front of the motor about 18" from the carb as its close to the carb but makes for a clean looking engine bay. You need to use a fuel pressure gauge between the regulator and the carb to set it after which you can leave it to check it from time to time or remove it for a cleaner more stock appearance.
