4x10 to 6x9 adapter

I ended up just putting a piece of wood above to space it up and wrap it so that I could fit the 6x9's

I bought some of the adapters off of Ebay for about $30 a few months ago. Just got around to trying to install them a couple weeks ago. First off, the adapters are actually designed to allow you to mount a 4x10 speaker in a 6x9 space, which is stupid. Why would anyone want to use an inferior quality speaker, and pay for an adapter to do it? Anyhow, certainly they can be modified or made to work for our intended purpose of installing 6x9s where a 4x10 is designed to go, but the 6x9 speakers I had are too deep and would've hit the tension bars, so I left the 4x10s in place, and I bought some "pods" off Ebay for the 6x9s and installed them under the rear of the front seats. I left off the speaker grills for clearance, and you can't really see the speakers from the outside of the car looking in. They do reduce foot room for the rear seat, but I don't ever have anyone in the back seat of my car. I wired them in parallel with the 4x10 rears so I now have an 8 speaker system. Sound is very good for what it is. I am not trying to win any thumpin' bass contests, just want good clarity when I am highway cruising with the T-Tops out. If your car is effectively a 2 seater like mine, I'd just go with the pods under the seat. If you get a lower profile 6x9, you may be able to put them entirely under the seat. If you often have riders in the back and can't get skinny enough speakers to do pods under the seat, then I guess you are stuck with 4x10s or trying to get an adapter to work.

If someone wants to try the adapters I have, shoot me a PM. I don't think I trashed them yet. I did drill out one of the holes because of course the pre-drilled holes didn't line up with my speakers or mounting holes.

I'm lucky that the Malibu has a bigger rear tray. While mine also came with 4x10's, I had enough room to put an adapter on top of the tray that allowed for the 6x9's. It tips the speakers slightly forward and raises them enough to get the bigger magnets to sit in without hitting the trunk spring. I was also able to put the sound deadening factory buckets back in as well. It turned out nice and keeps the sound in the riding area.

Nice! Care to post a picture? As i have the Sister car (LeMans) and if i can do the same to fit 6x9s with my Adaptors i repurchased a few years to do the same. I'd be pleased. P.s sound deadening factory buckets ??

Polk Audios are nice, I have the round (3 inch ??) ones in my front dash...30+ yrs old and still sound pretty good. Kenwood's too in rear shelf with the 6x9 adapters.

I'm not into the glass thumping bass/amps and all that, just needs to be clear...I'd rather hear the exhaust LOL

I went all Polk Audio everything and a Kenwood deck. While I rarely listen to it while driving, I prefer the sound of the engine/exhaust, I do want to hear it rolling down the freeway with the windows down.

not bad,. I'll need to figure out how to use the original grilles. I'm going for a Survivor look. I need to buy all the correct 4x10 factory hardware anyway. mines totally gone. 🙁
