My question is will this work. I am across the country from my cutlass so I can not figure out which rear it is. And I know that they interchange. But i do knot know the spline count can I get 28 spline axles and a 28 spline lock right and put that I the carrier if it is the other one?

I do believe they do interchange as far as the A/G bodies are concerned. I up graded to a 28 spline Detroit locker and KA axles in my 79 Monte Carlo many years back and it was a direct swap. The 7.5 vs 7.625 as I was told by a employee from American Axle refers to the face thickness of the ring gear. .125 thicker must be stronger!

The measurement is of the diameter of the ring gear not the thickness. Upgrading to a 28 spline carrier and axles work, but putting a 28 spline lock right in a 26 spline carrier won't, as far as I know. And your Cutlass would have 26 spline axles stock.
