I agree. On my first Cutlass which was an 84, it was a fudge brown when I got it and I ended up hating that color so I had it repainted black. Long story short, it ended up all blacked out. It looked good that way. Either completely blacked out or not at all.
I'm going "back in black" with my 86 and I was just tossing some ideas around in my head. "I wonder how this would look..." or "What if I did this..." These cars were luxury cruisers when new. Classy. Mom used to say "It's hard to beat the looks of a black car" and I guess she was right. Seems most older new car ads you'd see and the cars/trucks were black.
I was around when the 60's cars where still roaming the roads daily. It was a common sight to see the Mustangs, Cudas, Camaros, Cougars, etc bruising the asphault. So I tend to lean towards the chrome and vinyl tops. I know what's happening under that vinyl and the wide door moulding...rust. But it just looks so darn cool. The designers really stepped up to the plate. The mid-to-late 70's were so blah and drab.
So, I guess if I can't do a better job of redesigning a car then I'll just freshen up what they did such a good job at. I'll have a new black vinyl top put back on and polish up the side moulding before it goes back on the doors. I'm not going for a sleeper look but the body and interior will look stock. The few exceptions will be the 6 speed shifter sticking through the stock console, Burgandy leather wrapped aftermarket steering wheel with Autometer gauges replacing the stock ones and the red C5 brakes behind the 17" mesh wheels. It will be lowered 1"-1.5" and the exhaust sticking out behind the rear tires will be more like 2.5". Oh yeah, and my repro (J.C. Whitney  ) H/O rear spoiler.
I have looked at a bunch of pictures on this site and it's really made me appreciate the cars that much more. And you guys have some really sweet rides! I just hope someday mine will be as worthy. Thanks for the inspiration!
