I am trying to finish a sbc 350 and 700r-4 swap in my 84 cutlass. I just keep running into problems. Can anyone tell me if the 700r-4 requires the smaller 153 tooth flexplate? Also if anyone knows what starter I should be pairing this up with?

It doesn't require the small flexplate. And buy the starter for whatever flexplate you end up using.

The reason I ask is because I have the 168 tooth flexplate now and the inspection cover hits the plate, and I have had difficulty getting a starter to line-up.

Hmm...well i'm running the 168 tooth flexplate but, I haven't tried to put the inspection cover back on. And I'm running a summit mini-starter too.
so
i might not be much help then  .
Is your inspection cover the sheet metal one or is it a cast aluminum one?

Gotcha, I been asking around and have gotten too opposite answers lol. PATC tells me that I can run either flexplate and that I might have to shim the cover. They say that the stock stamped steel cover fits best. All my buddies round here all got camaros and claim I need the 153 tooth flexplate...I personally think PATC probably knows best being that they specialize in 700r-4's.

Ya I know the larger flexplate works, I even put a 400 with the 168 tooth flexplate in a 88 k1500 with the 700r4 and the aluminum cover. Didn't have any issues with that one. I figured the steel cover would provide more clearance but don't know for sure. I would prolly just space it out. No, actually my dumbass would just run without it like I have been for 11 years now 😳

Yea...I would run without a cover but its gonna be a daily driver, so probably not the best idea lol

Oh yea and keep in mind I drive on NY roads too!

Quick question for you...Do you know the part number of the mini starter you are using?
