My 700 won't shift into 3rd or 4th gear... This happened to me before in an 89 IROC I had. I just replaced the whole thing before but now I want to just have this one rebuilt or do it myself.

How hard is it to throw new bands on it? And pull everything apart, and maybe do a shift kit in it while its out of the car.

Anyone have any exploded diagrams or have any links to any sites that would walk me through the rebuild process? I'm pretty mechanically inclined just need to know where to find my resources.

Thanks in advance.

I considered this when my 700 gave up. I was considering getting a helper DVD. There are tools that either need to be bought or made.

I finally took it to a trans shop because if one thing was screwed up during assembly then the whole transmission would have had to come back out (I wouldn't have known of a mistake until it was back in the car).

The diagram looks complex but it can't be that hard. I was quoted 1000 for a rebuild by an idiot with out a high school education. Nothing against not finishing grade school but I'm certain with the right book/ manual and tools I can do the same thing, save money and learn something at the same time. its about as simple as reading and following directions. Again if someone who can't comprehend me explaining what transmission I have and in what car and whats wrong, I highly question whether or not they can handle rebuilding my transmission.

Anyone on here know of a good book/manual to buy to do a rebuild?

Get yourself a Haynes automatic trans guide. I got one and with a little help from a friend I rebuilt my 700r-4. I just had my friend help with the endplay and the clearance on clutch packs. The transmission is not that bad to rebuild. Seems to me that Trans-go has one of the best shift kits and don't skimp on rebuild kit, get good clutches and steels. Also if you haven't done any upgrades yet...

Best upgrades are:
Beast Sunshell
4L60 Input Sprag
10 or 13 Vane Rotor Kit
.500 Boost Valve
Corvette Style or better Servo
There are a few ways to improve accumulator, depending on who you talk to
Corvette Governor
Torrington Bearing here and there
I also did a shift improver kit...but there are some duplicated parts upgrades between shift improver & shift kit

Everything else is pretty much valve body balls and assorted springs throughout trans.

We do a lot of bussiness with TransStar out of Charlotte, NC. Good quality parts and Candi is a very knowledgable customer service lady

I think I'm going to pull the trigger and go ahead and do it myself.

I was looking at a kit on summit.com... A kit by TCI? OR B&M?

Can I purchase all the upgraded goodies like the vette servo, hardened sun shell and all that through a site like summit racing? Or do I need a more specialized source? Or would some of these upgrades be supplied in a specific kit?

Thanks for the input everyone! Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a lot of people out here in the SF bay area CA that are on the up and up with these rebuilds... Not with out trying to rape my wallet or any other orafices for that matter... It is crazy California after all.

Wit transmission. go to their. Website.

The monster in a box kit seems like the most legit, straight forward way to go. Im going to probably go that route. But I'm still waiting to see if I can do a T-5 swap perhaps... We shall see. I'm still low on funds and am switching jobs in the next couple weeks. Going to do mechanic work at a local Honda dealership. So I want to tap into some resources there before I start breaking this thing down. Who knows, some old dude might have some sh*t laying around his house he might want to get rid of.
