700r4 shifting and shaking problem

If the fly wheel and/or torque converter is bad I am pretty sure it can tear the crank in half over time. Since it vibrates in park and neutral that would definately point torwards the balancer, fly wheel, and torque converter being bad. Check the balancer for any dry rot cracks on the rubber or anything that would indicate that its slipping. The flexplate will have a spec for how much warpage it will have and the converter will also have specs to see if it is out of round/ warped and if the size is the same from it possibly ballooning to much.

trans problem

disconnect the converter and slide it to the rear and crank the motor and find out ...jesse

Thanks everybody for the advice. The vibration problem has been somewhat inconsistant. I would replace something and it would kind of go away or not as much or would shake under different occations. I think it's been a little bit of everything being worn out. In this order I'm going to elimanate possible things that could be the vibration and run vehicle to see.
1.harmonic balancer
2.driveshaft
3.transmission
4. converter
5.flywheel

I've read that when rebuilding the 4.3, you must keep the rods, crank and pistons made at the same plant and year together or you might have a vibration problem. I sure hope that's not the case, because that would give me one more reason to not trust machine shops.

Again thanks!! It might be awhile but I'll repost what happen

Start with the easiest things first. Do what jesse said and disconnect the converter from the flywheel. That will eliminate the flywheel and the driveshaft as the problem. If the problem still exists, I would go for the cheaper of the balancer and the flywheel.

I am pretty sure that machine shops will not balance the rotating assembly unless you ask them to do so, and that will be an extra price. I am pretty sure they balance it with the flywheel and balancer installed. I am not positive of the balancer being installed.

I got an incomplete long block from the machine shop with no flywheel, covers, oil pump or rockers attached. The machine shop was comparable to a fast food restaurant if you know what i mean. You get what you pay for and time will tell if I made out ok.

Okay here's the latest. I took the transmission out of the S10 and a vibration was caused by a warped flywheel. I'm embarrassed that I didn't notice the first time. I decided that there was to many signs that the second transmission was showing its age. When I say age I mean how long it sat around before I used it. It's a shame, because it only had 1000 miles on it since its last rebuild. After talking to a transmission guy, he said it more than likely got dirt in it and needs to be taken apart and cleaned. That and the seals inside it were probable dryed out. 🙁 That was news I didn't want to hear. I need my S10 and I just rebuilt the suspension and engine. Money has gotten real tight lately and I wasn't in the position to be spending more money into that $blackhole$. I did have one option that wouldn't cost anything. My malibu had a 700r4 that had less than 20,000 miles on it and I knew the history on the transmission. So I decided to take the malibu transmission out and put it in the blazer. Now I have a whole other set of problems.

Here's the problems that have affected the s10 from before the first engine and transmission.
1. RPM gauge seems like it reads about 800 to high
2. temp gauge reads low
2. engine rpm excessively high at highway speeds(4k)
3. when you first start engine, it idles high for 30-60 seconds, even when engine is not cold.(2-3k)

Here's the brand new problems after the third transmission
1.transmission shifts at high rpm(4-5k) in all gears and shifts hard. I'm 90% sure that the TV cable is the wrong size and needs adjusting. It also has a shift kit in it. What's throwing me for a loop is that it won't shift into 4th until 70mph!!
2. Speedometer reads higher than actual speed by about 10mph

I hate to say this but what could be a major contributor to your problems is your mixing and matching parts, especially those of questionable original and rebuild status. For the 4.3, especially the later ones (newer than yours) you have to keep the rotating assembly in the same family, particularly the balance shaft and crank. Remember, these are nothing more than small-blocks with 2 cylinders missing. I ran into major problems with my 4.3(s) and balancing - they're nightmares.

Anyway, yes by letting your transmission sit for 4 years without usage, and guessing you didn't cover / seal the tail end, dipstick, dirt and moisture got in it and may have wrecked havoc.

As people stated earlier if you're getting hi-rpm shifting you're TV cable needs serious adjusting. If you have 4th gear shifting at 70mph it's hanging up in third due to TCC / not getting a signal to the computer to shift and that shift-kit at helping right now. Your speedo issue could be the input / output gear in the trans, causing the signal to be off.
