I'm currently working to get my 78 cutlass, which was my first car back in high school, back on the road. It has a 260 v8 that never ran right and now has a severe knock. I'm wondering what motors will bolt on to my existing mounts and trans to minimize the amount of extra work and fabrication involved in swapping a non bolt on motor. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Any olds V8: 307 olds, 350 olds, 403 olds, etc. You have the TH200 trans? It might last if you baby it, a TH350 is a direct swap and is a much better trans.

What Evan said. Olds 350/th350 combo from 68-72 (non windowed blocks, stronger) would be perfect. But any olds V8 will fit.

Even an early Olds 307 with 5A heads will feel like a drag car in comparison. When you do the swap, add true dual exhaust. As said, Olds 307, 330, 350 or 403 are DIRECT bolts in. Use the water pump off your 260, Olds have 4 different lengths.
