80 Grand Am Paint code 77L 77U62c1

Often times each division of GM had their own names for a color even though it was the same on all cars. In 1967 code R was Apple Red on Buick, Bolero Red on Chevy and Regimental Red on Pontiac, but they were all the same color. May be the case here. :wink:

Let me back up too! Did a web search (GM Agate red paint code). This search sent me back to paintref.com., GM paint cross reference page 37 of 334. From there I entered 1980 Pontiac. Went down the list to Agate red, and low and behold, Pontiac Agate Red has a paint code of 77! I guess I should have looked deeper the first time! Sorry about that! 😳

That all makes sense because GM hadn't yet gone to "corporate color names" at that point. :wink:

Hey Tinman, this has been a learning experience. I checked paintref.com...question: how can all these different colours have the same GM Code WA7104 or Ditzler PPG 3213 or SherwinWilliams 30219? Plus,
How can I get a sample to confirm it's the colour I want?

Wish I could tell you, but I'm not a body/paint man. Maybe someone else knows the answer to your question.

I was body man and painter for 30 years along with being in the upholstery business. Every formula is subject to be a slightly different tone or color. Your car was probably painted with DuPont or less likely R&M (Rinshad-Mason). One of those would match better most likely, but if it's an overall paint job any of them should be close enough. You should be able to tell by a color chip from an old book if it's for sure the Agate/Cinnabar or Red Orange.

I went out to my shop and found the '78 Pontiac sales brochure I bought when I had my '78 Grand Am. On the back page is a list of the Pontiac colors and their codes.
The Grand Am exterior paint and lower body (accent) color combinations. They are as follows: 11-- Cameo White (56- Burnished Gold or 22- Glacier Blue), 15-- Platinum (77-Carmine), 19-- Starlight Black (56- Burnished Gold), 29-- Nautilus Blue (15- Platinum), 44-- Seafoam Green (45- Mayfair Green), 61-- Desert Sand (56- Burnished Gold), 69-- Chesterfield Brown (56- Burnished Gold), and 72-- Roman Red (15- Platinum).
I realize this information has nothing to do with the '80 Grand Am, just posted it for you to decide about getting an '80 owners brochure (or if someone has an '80 brochure, they might send you a copy of the paint code information).
Also note that the accent color with a Platinum Grand Am is "77- code for Carmine Red" (from the list above).

The '80 cars, all 1647 were charcoal accent, regardless of upper color which was also limited on the Grand Am. A lot of the codes changed as to what color they represented so an '80 brochure would indeed be a handy thing to have.

My "1980 Pontiac product manual" lists the reds as:
*77 Agate Red available interior: oyster, black, camel tan
*= not availible Firebird model


Available LeMans, Grand LeMans, Grand Prix, Catalina, Bonneville and Bonneville Brougham
75 Bordeaux Red -- available interior: oyster, black, maroon
72 Francisco Red -- available interior: oyster, black, carmine
