HEY GUYS I INSTALLED A NEW CHAIN AND GEARS AND HAD IT AT TDC WITH THE ROTOR BUTTON POINTING AT THE NUMBER ONE PLUG ON THE CAP. IT KINDA ACTS LIKE IT WANTS TOSTART WHEN THE THROTTLE IS HELD WIDE OPEN BUT NOT. BATTERY IS CHARGED. AND I DIDNT PUT EVERYTHING BACK ON THE FRONT OF THE MOTOR YET TIL I HEAR IT RUN BUT THE TIMING COVER, distributor are back on. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME? Also I have the firing order going clockwise at 1-6-5-4-3-2. THANKS!!!!

Re: 83 regal 3.8L timing chain broke and now it won't start

Well did the chain breaking cause the motor I bend some valves? Next would be the fact most guys put the dist. in off by 180 degrees, double check everything

Re: 83 regal 3.8L timing chain broke and now it won't start

did you turn the engine to number 1 cylinder and test by putting your finger in the spark plug hole? before you dropped the distributor in? if not of course it wont fire. you can turn engine over with the distributor on the wrong cylinder same thing put your finger in the spark plug hole. but you will have to advance all your wires to match the firing order.once you have done that you can turn it over and advance the distributor till you get it to run.then correct everything

Re: 83 regal 3.8L timing chain broke and now it won't start

Yes I put my finger over the hole and I'm guessing on the blow that comes out harder is the compression stroke and that's the one I put it on. Also I put the balancer mark at 0 degrees.... What am I doing wrong?

Re: 83 regal 3.8L timing chain broke and now it won't start

I also suspect bent valve...
have you tested compression yet on all cylinders or just on #1?
This simple test will help rule out bent valve or incorrectly clocked cam shaft

Re: 83 regal 3.8L timing chain broke and now it won't start

I haven't done a compression check yet

Re: 83 regal 3.8L timing chain broke and now it won't start

Idk if a bent valve is the issue, it's a free spinning engine if I remember correctly but it can't hurt to check it. I'd follow everyone's advice just double checking the dizzy and the cam. It would make sense if you were off by just a bit.

Re: 83 regal 3.8L timing chain broke and now it won't start

If you put the crank on 0 on the balancer, and lined up the dots on the cam and crank, then dropped in the dist. it is 180 degrees out of time. With the dots lined up the cam is actually at the number 4 firing position, you have to rotate the crank one turn to get it in the correct position to install dist. pointing at number one plug wire on the cap. This engine is a non-interference engine( it will not bend valves when out of time) so I do not think the valve train is to blame. Check and double check your timing and dist. installation.

Re: 83 regal 3.8L timing chain broke and now it won't start

Well that's awesome I sure hope you are correct. I appreciate anyone's help with this a I was getting ready to pull the motor but I didn't wanna go with the 305 or 350 bc of gas mileage. So I need to zero it up on the timing mark, then turn it one full rotation then drop the dist in and point at the number one plug wire? Sorry tho is all new to me
