Okay so since the street outlaws show aired I've noticed a lot more little spoiled rich kids around here revving their little wannabe ricers and P.O.S. mustangs up(God I hate a ford) at the red light. I hate to say it but I have to admit I drive a very very built civic. Sorry y'all but you can't beat 34mpg when you commute 60 miles a day and its fun to watch the mustang guys get embarrassed when the civic chews them up and spits them out in front of their girlfriends!! Anyway I have an 84 caballero that my grandfather passed down to me that I was gonna build a drag car out of but the 82 Monte(dirt track MONSTER CARLO) took the build fund out from under me this season. The car wasn't worth restoring I promise so I stripped it and did a small bit of work. Since then I've gone back and forth between drag, drift, autocross, and don't hate me cause I like the look but 4x4 chassis swap. I finally have come to the conclusion that I'm gonna start outrunning the spoiled rich kids in style, the bed is decked in with aluminum and its got a fuel cell in the back. The rear end got donated to my monte so I'm probably going back with a bigger one. I wanted to see if anyone had some ideas for me. I know I'm going with a 2" drop and some 17's to give it the "custom" look but I'm gonna keep the paint simple and throw in a super restrictive exhaust and some electric cutouts so I can wipe that arrogant smirk off those little bastards faces before I even get in the pedal good. Oh I forgot to mention I'm building my dream engine for it. I've got big plans I know but i think I'm about to land a great job and its all gonna work out. Give me some ideas or constructive criticism

Really wanna make it look like a sleeper?:
-Don't drop it low
-Don't put 17s on it
-Find some 15" wire hubcaps to use (not saying you can't still have grippy/wide-ish tires  )

Maybe I'm just jaded because I've seen so many old cars in action, but if I see a single "custom" piece on an older car then it instantly becomes a no-holds-barred project car in my mind. And who knows what they might've done under the hood? I think if you roll up on some rich kid in a Subaru and he sees you in an old, chrome, "El Camino" (I know yours is a Caballero) lowered onto some nice 17s, he's gonna address it as a "muscle car" and ask you what's under the hood (or just start bashing old cars if he's just a d*ck about it). But, if it's not too brilliantly colored and sitting at stock ride height with hubcaps then he might not suspect anything. If he revs it at you, keep the dumps closed. Save those for when you take off. The surprise of all that noise might make him miss a shift, or piss himself if you're really that lucky.
I'd say in this day and age, it's harder to get away with making a believable "sleeper" out of an old car unless the people you fool are clueless anyway. Old cars have gained quite the rep as rivals to new cars.

P.S. All of this being said, just wanna put it out there that I don't street race. (I was done after a $270+ speeding ticket.) Just as a heads up, all that noise from open exhaust might attract the unwanted attention of an authority figure. You're going to turn a lot of heads, and some of those heads might belong to angry older women with cellphones. Something to keep in mind.

I don't street race either but I have asked a few owners of those ricers where there car will be when it's 30 years old......

Well bad luck struck again I'm now the proud owner of a totalled civic thanks to the nice lady with the cell phone glued to her ear that decided to play bumper cars with me this morning. I guess I spoke a little too soon on my dreams for the caballero. I'm currently sitting in the hospital waiting on this jackass doctor to tell me what I already know and send me back to work. The terrible thing about it she had a designer outfit on and was driving a new and i mean NEW Mercedes with 20's on it but no insurance. I sure do hope she enjoys that fun trip to the local concrete lock box cause that hag earned it. Oh and she claimed "huh neck wuh huttin" until the cop so kindly explained to her dumbass that when you change lanes and run someone into a pecan grove that's 60 feet from the initial point of contact or at least where "duh black lines is" as she said it its your fault. All I have to say is behind every car crash there's a woman on a cell phone. She should just be glad that I've got too much pride and good enough morals to fake an injury. I shall be posting pics of my south ga pecan tree/Honda civic soon if I can ever get them to upload on my phone.

I'd agree with only the clueless fall for the sleeper thing anyways. The el camino itself has become too much of a known vehicle to fix up. So why not make it into the vehicle you'd want to be seen in. Go just as custom as you like so you have something to be proud of & look good in.

As far as kids wanting to race, I try to look good enough that I don't need to bother with them & their piddly stuff, got better things to do in my adult life. Sometimes ignoring someone is the best way to get the better of them. The real badasses in life know who they are & don't feel the need to constantly prove it.
Just sayin.

PS, took a break while posting & didn't see your last post till I entered it.Don't give up yet on any of your dreams, they may just have to come later
