I'm going to be dropping in a 455 into my 84 cutlass this winter and I need help with what wires to hook up where. I got the cutlass without an engine and I have never done anything like this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

There are only a few basic wires you need to run a 455 with, the starter solenoid wire (I believe it's purple), the ignition wire (I think it's pink), and the plug in for the alternator. If you want to keep the accessories such as a/c then all the wire's that go with them such as the heater stepped resistor which is beside the heater blower on the firewall and the a/c compressor clutch connector. If your pulling out your ecm or even if your planning on keeping it in the car just follow the wires which come out of the bottom of the firewall on the passenger side and unhook everything that they go to. It's not that bad really.

The info in the previous post is good. The only thing I would add is you might want to relocate the battery to the driver's side. G-bodies have a battery tray on both sides, Buick motors came with the battery on the right, Olds motors the battery on the left. If you go with HEI in your 455, pretty much everything that you'll need is already there and will hook right up to the 455. There's a red wire that comes from the blower motor high-speed relay, that will go to the + terminal on the starter. My car is a former V6, I also bought it without a motor. I had all the wiring hooked up within a couple hours.

Just something to keep in mind, the battery placement was determined by where the starter was so they didn't run 10 ft of battery cable around the engine compartment, I agree things can be cleaned up quite a bit by moving the battery to the other side but keep in mind where your starter is.
