442 85 442 Flat Tappet CCC Cam Swap??

Was looking at a Comp Cams 218/218 as a potential swap for a stock 85 VIN 9 cam. Something the stock ECM can handle, as well as not kill any more performance than what these 307s don't have to begin with. My main concern is that it doesn't run stupid or make things worse than stock and the ECM can keep stock calibration, but yet be a tad more modern. It looks like a minimal change in specs, but you know how these things can be tricky.

Comp Cam specs.
0.456/0.456 lift, 268/268 adv dur, 110LSA.

Anyone do a cam swap with maintaining the CCC? Just wondering out loud.
 
Talking to Luke years ago:

210/216 @ .050 will need to be advanced 4 degrees to keep the computer happy in a 307, this is pretty much the limit of the CCC system.

Engle 2EP-15/18 207/216 @ .050 with .466/.496 lift is a good cam.

Crane also has H-260-2 204/216 @ .050, .454/.484 lift.

I did a cam swap with keeping the CCC but with a Chevy which sadly means I probably won't be much help.
 
Attached is the Elgin OEM stock or "supposed to be". Which shows to be a little different from what was shown above.

I did a X268H about 6 yrs ago in an 84 vin 9 from an 84 Delta 88. That was put in an 86 Cutlass, but CCC bypassed, carb was a Edelbrock 650, ext manifold with flow master duals, no headers. Ran ok after install, but as said the CCC system was bypassed. It was a customer build, so no long term experience of the result over time.
Those specs above aren't a stock VIN 9. Plus, the VIN 9 wasn't installed in a 1984 Delta 88 at the factory. If it wasn't in a Hurst/Olds or already an engine swap, it was a 307 Y.

I know when Luke had his 83 and did the mods to it, the thing ran pretty darn strong for a 307. But he was out for blood on it and was trying every trick in the book while spending a lot of $$ so he could make it perform like a strong 350. Which it did, but wasn't the greatest bang for the buck project. And if I were to do an engine swap, I think I'd do a 403 or even a 455.

Thanks for everyone's responses. I'm all for newer cam technology, but I think I'm going to give this one a pass. What's the point of restoration if you're going to intentionally modify stuff? And, if something didn't want to play well with the ECM, then it's not like a super-easy fix to do another cam swap.

Must have been late..., Yes Vin Y not 9. Long day yesterday. I deleted the entry.
But in 1984, the Y and 9 were both flat tappet cams, so it would still apply. The nearly .400 lift is a pretty tame cam, though.
 
Usually when installing a bigger cam in a carbed engine you need to advance the base ignition timing to help restore idle quality. The Chevy version of EQjets have idle bypass air to help with idle tuning while the Olds version seem to lack bypass air.
