I run flowtech headers with flowmaster 40's and love'em. The headers are full length headers btw. I've heard good things about the summit mufflers. They're supposed to be a single chamber design and work just as good as flowmasters but are only 25-30$ a mufflers. Flowtech headers are only about 100$.

I disagree with Pat. I would highly recommen NOT geting Flowtech products.

last set I had, the flanges were not flat. Had to get very thick gaskets to seal. The bolt holes were not accurate, I had to get a drill and open up the holes so that it would actually bolt on. Also, in gneral, the headers were very low quality. Within six months they began rusting at the joint between the flange and the primaries. The ones I bought were there in-and-out coated headers. I was extremely disappointed overall with the quality.

I purchased a set of Hooker Comps for the same price. They fit better, bolted up with 0 modifications required, and they look nicer, to boot. I would recommend them to anyone.

No doubt.

Iv'e said it before and I'll say it again; cheap headers suck and even though you MAY get a set of el cheapo's that actually fit or suck less than another set, they're still garbage AS A PRODUCT because of quality control issues. You simply cannot 'highly recommend' a product like Flowcrap headers just because your one set you bought 'fit like a glove' because they all don't fit like that due to crappy quality control. And poor fitment is only one of the issues with cheap headers.

try the patriot clippsters headers they are a mid length header, you can reach plugs pretty easy i have them with 2.5 true dual exhaust and flowmaster 40 series it sounds amazing and they also have a real thick mounting flange to prevent warpage cause sum of the cheaper headers have a thinner flange not as strong.. you can put them on with them bolted on or you can sit your motor in and bolt it up and still drop them in from the top and bolt them up no problem. just remember when you looking for headers you need to look for sum for a gbody monte or malibu because it is a sbc motor. there about $170 at summitracing but worth it ive had my set on my last monty and now my 84 cutty with sbc 327.

Well, It's been a while, but i went with the hooker shorty headers. The muffler shop dude is recommending 2.25" exhaust. does that sound right? Some quick specs:
86 Cutlass
GMPP 350/290 crate engine
Hooker shorty headers.
Modified/reinforced crossmember to allow for true dual exhaust.
Summit "welded" mufflers

I really dont plan on doing anything through the roof with this engine( will prob. end up w/ 350 HP max.) Life happens, and daycare costs overrides dad's toys  so it's taking a looooooong time to get the ol' girl going.

Anyway, 2.25 or 2.5 in. exhaust? and possibly why. I'll post some pics on my progress when i get a chance, thanks in advance.

2.25? Why would you go smaller? Bigger is only going to be better. Are you planning any mods in the future? That 2.25 pipe diameter will probably work with your GMPP crate, though, but if you ever go to something bigger, that 2.25 is going to be too small. For now, it's probably fine to stay 2.25.

2.5 is what im thinking also. GMPP recommends 2.5 in exhaust. I scrapped the plans of building a hi- perf. 383 later down the road, and want to eventually drop in a olds 455. this crate engine will be fine in the meantime, and when I do the 455 olds swap I'll already have the 2.5" exhaust. BTW, The Hooker shorty headers that i went with fit perfectly with no problems in this GMPP 350/290 Crate engine install.

2466HKR is the Summit part number, just FYI for anyone wondering. 1 5/8" primaries, 3" collectors.
