Hi,

I am beginning to start piecing together the idea of purchasing another car.
My last car was booted due to tickets while I was unemployed by the city.

So I'm savin my shekels and looking for a GP around the end of summer.
I have taken a shine to the 2+2 aero coupe, specifically the nose of it.
But, I have questions....

What are the known problems with this model? (i.e. Regals have the oil thing)
What should I expect to pay for one in decent running condition?
Are they high theft cars, like say compared to a Regal, not a GN.

Any advice from owners of the 2+2? Or perhaps one or two that may be thinking of selling one soon?

Thanks for any input guys

Michal

Well for starters, they're incredibly rare, 1100 some built I think. I believe reproduction decals may be available, but the aero nose, rear glass, decklid and spoiler will be hard to locate if damaged. Also, due to the extreme length of the rear glass, the trunk opening is all but unusable. Under the skin, it's just a regular Grand Prix, no real performance improvements.

I'd love to have one, but not as a daily driver. That's a car that would be worth keeping as original as possible.

They used to come up on ebay alot until the economy slowed....nobodys buying anything. Nice ones...5k. Most I've seen have problems...rusty body, cracked fibreglass, worn interior.

305

Problems with 305s of that era are: valve train issues common and timing chains. My sister had an 85 camaro 305 HO and it had to be rebuilt because of those 2 issues. Burning oil on start up equals leaking valve seals, very common on them. Look at the frame rails ahead of the rear bumper for swelling/holes and the floorboards. These issuea are more for high mileage cars, but I have seen them on cars that were not looked after well. They are a neat looking car, too bad they didn't put a 350 or 3.8 turbo in them. If you do swap motors, remember to keep all original parts out of it and also the 200R4 in there will not be a performance one like in the GN so it will need attention if you go to anything more than a fairly stock 350.

Any G-body is extremely vulneralble to theft, especially high end models and especially in an area like Chicago.

Unless you have a secure garage to keep it in, I would suggest something a little less eye catching.

Hey, thanks for all of the response to this.

I don't think a wagon is in my future, I have nothing against them, just not my thing. A hearse perhaps, but that's not a g-body. lol

I am not entirely stuck on the 2+2, I just love the looks of the thing. I did check out the site for the kit. All I can say is WHOA $$$$$. I found a good looking real one for less then it would cost me to get a GP and convert it.

I do know that many G-bodies are stolen here, I do have a secure garage, and since one of my Fieros was mistaken for an Italian supercar, I'm paranoid about being followed. And all of my cars get an alarm and a grant removable steering wheel kit. I even have a cool carrybag for the wheel.

I guess what I will be looking for would be more accurately described as a project car. I have driven a car that was 3 colors, and had a Cuda that you could put your fist through the side of the fender. So I'm used to junkyard diving and being laughed at, until the light changes. 🙂

I saw a post from a guy on here who found one for like $1200 that had been painted black and needed some TLC. That was done up real nice and is what I will be doing.

As a side note, I don't have alot to offer in the way of help on these cars themselves, but I am a good set of hands, and have been building computers for quite sometime now, and also was a photography instructor, so if anyone has needs any help in those areas, or needs a pair of extra hands locally, just shoot me a PM or email. I'll help out in any way I can.

Thanks for making me feel welcome
Michal

i know whatcha mean about the kits. i'm doing the nose conversion from them. gotta bite the bullet.

I don't know how far you're willing to go to get a 2+2, but there is currently one of these cars for sale in Ontario. The seller is asking $2,000.00CDN, so the price is reasonable, but judging by the photos in the ad, its definitely a project vehicle. Here is the link to the ad-
http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicle ... Z105515110 Or you can try checking on kijiji for Toronto Ontario, and use Grand Prix 2+2 as a search parameter. Hope this helps.

On my "someday" list os picking up a 2+2 and doing one of the following:

Make it the car (GTO) Pontiac should have built using stock type parts.
Here is a "concept " drawing in HPP a few years back. I played with it, would go without the hood stripe etc, looks to much like a Hurst Olds.
BobzGTO.jpg

Mild roller Pontiac 350, 200r,3.42 and all the bracing/handling stuff from other GM cars. Would make a great, all around , car.

Or gut it and make a total G-machine. Pontiac 400, TKO600. 3.73, slam it to the ground with a SC&C suspension, matched 17" all around etc etc.

Remember anything that car be unbolted can be bolted back on. You may acually be preserving it "better" by removing the stock stuff and mothballing it.

An engine never blew sitting in storage.Seat don't get anymore worn while be properly stored etc etc.
