REGAL 86 regal starting issues

I have an 86 regal with a sbc 305. I just got the car and having problems starting it. I can turn the key and it sometimes sounds like the starter is turning but not catching on to anything. Then it will start but when i let the key go it continues to try to start then the positive battery cable starts smoking. Im lost on Why this is happening.

Sounds like you need to replace the solenoid on the starter.
