whats going on i have a 87 cutlass 307 original with 140,000 miles engine ran perfect no smoke no oil leak starts on 1st turn but one day in the 100 degrees heat she overheated on me .All hoses are in good shape oil is not milky thermal stat is removed i drive it around the block with no problems but i don't want to go far since it overheated that one time would not having a fan shrout cause this to happen because i can let the car run for 20 min in place with no problem

Yes, no fan shroud can lead to overheating; also, are you saying that there is no thermostat installed? If so, also a bad thing. Install a thermostat in there.

Yea the two fastest ways to overheat a car, no shroud it won't pull through the radiator. No thermostat does two things, it allows the water to move to fast through the radiator for it to be cooled, and it doesn't spend enough time in the motor to pull the heat out. Even 900hp circle track motors run at least a restrictor most run a 205 thermostat, to build water pressure and cool correctly

cool thanks i will find a shrout an install a thermostat an try it out

had the same prob with mine,i was running a round with out a hood and no fan shroud.mine would over heat after about 15 min. got a shroud and problem was solved.

I would also check the clutch fan . If that's bad it would cause the over heating.

Its easy to check with the engine off grab the fan and try and spin it back wards and let go. If it keeps spinning then your clutch is bad. It should stop as soon as u let it go.

But for sure get a shroud and thermostat in there too.

I echo what everyone else said- I dealt with running hot issue with my c10 that had a .060 over bored engine, no fan shroud and twin electric fans- put a shroud, flex fan or clutch fan, and run a 180 or 195 thermostat (factor was probably 195) and it will run cooler. Funny how a higher temp thermostat could make it run cooler huh? What actually happens is, the coolant stays in the radiator until the temp of the engine coolant is 195, then the thermostat opens, and the cooled off coolant from the radiator rushes into the block and the thermostat closes, cycle repeats. If you go with a lower temp thermosat, it open faster which will cause the coolant in the radiator to not have enough time to cool off, and the motor will oftn times run HOTTER with a numerically cooler thermostat. Trust me on this one.
