Pay close attention to the delta 88s from the 60s to 1980. The 350 and larger Olds V8s are super common in those cars and there were millions of them made.

If you can't find a delta 88 with a V8 in southern Indiana then you're not looking hard enough!

What engine would most likely be in a 1966? The owner told the guy it had a 400 in it? But looking at most during this time it seems its a 425. I didn't get to talk with the previous owner. Would this engine work? I'm not sure what the body was the emblems were gone. I know its not the tornado it had 4 doors and the size of an aircraft carrier. I only ask about this one because the motor was really clean and wouldn't be off the road if the brakes had not given way and found a tree...

88,

If you look on the front-top of the engine block, there's a space between the water pump and the intake manifold. It's a flat surface / pad that's between the oil fill tube (on your left side - passenger side of vehicle) and I believe the coolant temp sensor. There should be a six-digit casting number followed by a capital letter. Looking through my notes:

For a '66 400 the casting number should be something like 390925 and have a capital letter "E"; a '65 block would have the letter "B" and a later 400 would have a "G", with different casting numbers.

For a '66 425, casting is 389244, with a "D". Also may be an "A" ('65 vintage), again with different casting numbers.

Hope this helps.

Hey thanks man, can anyone tell me if this thing will bolt right up to my transmission which is the stocker? How about the mounts are they in a different location? If in fact its the 66/400? I appreciate the help fellows.

All Olds motors have the same bellhousing bolt pattern and the same motor mount bolt holes, so it will bolt up to your existing trans. Use the 307 motor mounts, as these are matched to your frame mounts. Be aware that 64-67 Olds motors used a different crank flange bolt pattern than the 68-90 motors, so you must use the correct flywheel that matches the motor. Also be aware that a big block Olds has a taller deck height than the small block 307.

Joe,

Wouldn't the 400 sit slightly higher on the 307 mounts plus the added deck height? Or is this just a problem on the older A-body? I'm wondering if he could run into a slight hood clearance problem if hi-rise type intake, like a Performer or Torker is used. Guess you can offset it with a drop-base air cleaner.

Headers / exhaust manifolds may be an issue too, particularly on the passenger side.

Also check on Ebay for a used Olds 350, if you want to spend the money to rebuild it. You can sometimes find an engine/trans combo for around 100 bucks.

hell theres times where u can score running engines for free!!

What kind of 66 Olds are you looking at? If it is an A body ( Cutlass, 442, F-85, Vista Cruiser, etc.) it would not be a 400 unless it is a 442 except if it had been swapped. In that case, it may be a 330 or some other smaller Olds engine I am not familiar with.
