This my first time working on a project and I would like to know can the Caprice engine and 700r4 transmission work with an elcamino, and also would the rear end.

The driveshaft needs cut and may need the frame extension for the trans cross member.

The engine is just an SBC; will drop right in, but may be a TBI engine. The 700R4 will require a cut and balanced driveshaft, and a new or modified transmission crossmember. That weak B-body rear isn't worth the hassle of installing in a G-Body.

and a new or modified transmission crossmember
I've successfully installed the original crossmember on two 700r4 upgrades. by angling the crossmember and using 3 out of the 4 mounting holes, the crossmember will fit.

Not arguing, just thinking out loud...

Would that not be an 8.5 rear?

I know the width is wrong, and the upper mounts differ, but with the price of G body 8.5s, might merit looking into adapting with aftermarket uppers and high offset wheels. Have considered looking at having one narrowed versus going to a 9 inch, since I have access to several B body rears and there's a lot of trucks with better gears in the yards.

No, unless it's a 9C1 (police) Caprice. Not all B-body rears are 8.5" rears, and not all of the 8.5" rears have LSDs(posi). Also, all of the B-body 8.5" rears have the 5x5 bolt pattern, not 5x4.75 like G-bodies.

A proper, stronger crossmember made specifically for that swap cost no more than $300.
