Just bought a Moser 9" for my Monte. I'm on a strict budget due to school, work, etc.. My question is: My axles are 35 spline, if I get a mini spool and correct gears, will they all fit into a stock 9" 3rd member for now? Reason for doing, I can pick up stock 3rd member for $50 and want to get the Monte rolling again. I know it wont be the strongest, but I'm only going to be pushing ~400hp. I'm a new guy when it comes to rear ends.
Conclusion:
Want to fit 35 spine axles/spool/gears into a STOCK 3rd member. If the carrier is set for 3 series gears, can I buy a 4.10 kit that will work?

Hope you guys can understand,
Cory

The short answer is that it will work.

Just a bit of information for what it’s worth. Ford carriers are generally broken down by 2 major types 28 spline and 31 spline. You don’t need to play the different series game when changing gear sets like you do with a GM rear end. If you’re using a search engine to look up gear sets, also look up 4.11 ratios instead of just 4.10......there is a bigger selection of 4.11 for the 9” than there are 4.10s

The 35 spline axels you ordered are overkill for the HP you are planning on running and in all reality for the vast majority of street driven cars. In all reality for most small block powered G bodies the lowly 28 spline units are more than sufficient and even with a stall converter/NOS/slicks the 31 spline units will usually live a long happy life. The 35 spline upgrade is usually only REQUIRED for the really serious all out race cars......it seems most people order them for the street because of the bigger is better theory or for bragging rights.

The reason I bring this up is that the majority of factory rear ends are 28 and 31 spline units. Had you gone with 28 or 31 spline set of axels chances are pretty good you could have come across a good deal on a used Posi unit from a wrecking yard E Bay etc or even just thrown your $50 open 3rd member in as is to get you by until you could find/afford to properly set up a posi unit.

By going with a 35 spline axel you are limiting your options to aftermarket carriers/spools, for instance 35 spline mini spools are pretty hard to come by which can limit you to the full spools......unless you luck into someone who has a used 35 spline carrier just laying around and is willing to sell it you are going to end up spending $$$ for a new one.

You might also want to reconsider plan to take the cheap way out for now. The difference in price between a full spool and a posi unit is going to be in the between $200 and $400 dollars depending on the carrier you choose. When you do upgrade the $150-200 you spent on the spool is now money wasted in addition to what you’re going to be spending a second time to have the rear end set with a Posi unit (depending on the shop you use and additional $150-200). You may really want to hold off until you can afford to do what you really want the first time.

Just my 2 cents for what it’s worth.

I would highly consider what Mike P just posted. It was expertly written and makes a lot of sense, especially when you take the money into account.

Also, another thing to think about is for the cost of redoing the 9" again (if you did it cheaply now and the way you wanted it later), you could probably find a 7.5" at a junk yard and use it temporarily until your 9" is 100% ready.

guess I should of told the whole story..
I got this 9inch from a welder and he bought this rear for a malibu. It was a deal that went bad and he was stuck with this 9 inch. I bought it from him, moser housing and axles for $500. The axles came in the deal so that's what I have now. My choice is this: Stay with 35 spline and spend close to ~1500 on 3rd member or try and trade axles for 31 spline. This car will not have the motor in it for a while as I am in school and will be for a while longer. The rear just sits in my basement and that's no problem with me. Seems to me that I should just save my pennies and go big time with the good 3rd member.
Thanks for the advice guys,
Cory

Let the rear end set and build it the way you want as your pocket book allows you to. One other thing to consider before you sink any money into a stock carrier is that it MUST have the big bearings. The 35 spline axles will not even fit in the holes of the small bearing carriers.
Also, keep your eye out for slightly used stuff too. I bought a Strange aluminum center section for mine for $150 bucks because the guy wanted to upgrade to an Ultra Case. Of course I still had to get the spool, bearings, etc. But it's deals like that here and there that allow me to piece together what I have because I am like soo many others out there and on a pretty tight budget.

it kinda sounds like you just want to get the axles in to roll the car around
if so just put the axles in and bolt up the axle flange on a 9" you don,t need to have the jug in it to roll the car around
and you can use a stock case with no problems with 400hp just find a spool and get some gears and install kit
sould beable to have a gear set up fo under $600 max
if its going to be a driver I would not put a full ot mini spool in it will eat tires big time
