I have seen 2 different ads for a H/O (one was an '83 the other an '84) and it was listed as a Hurst/Olds 442. Where the H/O's considered 442s?

Also, the '85-87 442, besides the 442 badges, 8.5 rear, 3.73 gear, and suspension upgrade, was there anything that made these cars unique? Or were these basically just a Cutlass with a 442 stamped on it?

no matter what year.............a hurst is a hurst, and a 442 is a 442

as far as the difference...........H/O suspension, perfomance(horse power) and styling(front air damm, hood scoop, spoiler) were upped........... 442 just suspension and performance

I don't think the suspension was any better than any other cutlass with the F41 option unless you count the bigger wheels. The F41 was however, standard on the Hursts/442's and an option for other models.

That's because, like most in this world, they didn't do their homework...
The differences are cosmetic, that's it. They are all VIN 9 cars, but a Hurst is a Hurst and a 442 is a 442, the cosmetic differences are pretty obvious.
83's had 7.5" rears, 84-87 had 8.5" rears.
83-85 VIN 9 had flat tappet hydrolic lifters/cam and 5A heads
86-87 VIN 9 had roller setup with 7A heads and swirlport technology that compared to fuel injection.
Transmissions varied by year, 83-85 VIN 9 received an OZ valve body but 83 models had a different servo, this is typical with most car lines. 86-87 had a KZF valve body with stronger internals. turbobuick.com can answere any trans question you have as well as a Google search...
Not all 83's received air shocks.
Other than that they have cosmetic differences.

One other thing that's really just trival, don't laugh..... I've always said four forty two. With the Olds guys, is this unacceptable? Is the car a four-four-two or does it matter which you say?

that would be 4-4-2............

Definition of 4-4-2 from the Oldsmobile Factory Literature:
1964 (Original meaning)
4: Four Barrel Carburetion
4: Four On the Floor
2: Dual Exhausts

1965 (First year of automatic transmission option on 442)
4: 400 Cubic Inch Displacement
4: Four Barrel Carburetion
2: Dual Exhausts

1985 to 1987 (Last of RWD 442s)
4: Four speed automatic
4: Four barrel carburetor
2: Dual exhaust

1990 and 1991 (FWD 442)
4: Four cylinders
4: Four valves
2: Two camshafts
