Small town NY
This is a little different than the usual updates I post about the wagon.

Ten years ago today I spent the morning in the operating room at Sloan Kettering in NYC getting carved open like a turkey at Thanksgiving. Right about now I was in the recovery room. The operation was about 5 1/2 hours long. The recovery time sucked.

This is for every guy on this forum. Get your PSA checked every year and with that have your doctor do the DRE. For you folks that dont know that stands for digital rectal exam. Yup, the finger. Those two tests probably saved my life.
Since my surgery Ive come to know almost 30 guys that have had prostate cancer. Two died from it because it was caught too late. The surgeon told me its the easiest to cure if caught early but one of the more involved surgeries due to its location.
Im quite sure theres some other guys on this forum that have gone through what I have. If your reading this I hope you feel as blessed as I do. All I could think about was seeing my wife and two kids again as I was walking to the OR with the nurse. Now 10 years later I can still get out there and mess with my projects. Not everything works the same but in my mind its a small price to pay to be able to get up out of bed every day.

Mich,
I'm glad that you're still here and able to talk about your experience...plus your recommendation about getting checked out. Good information, for sure.

AMEN brother! Guys- get off your duffs and get checked out. Not just the prostate but the colon too. A guy I worked with had a colonoscopy, was given a clean bill, and 6 months later had colon cancer. It grew that fast. But they got it in time though he lost most of his stomach. Another friend retired and as soon as he did, got prostate cancer. They couldn't get it all so he is a regular at the MRI machine. My Wife had a gall bladder problem and because of that they found the early stage of uterine cancer, which they eliminated. Mikester- thanks for calling attention to this- we tend to think no news is good news, but it rarely is.

my father passed away in 1996 from prostrate cancer and since then I have been getting checked . the first time I was a little apprehensive but now I make jokes with the doctor about it but id rather go through that then let things go unchecked. my best friend had surgery a couple years ago and he is still here to tell his story and iam glad you are too.

Gotta be proactive. Guys need to get checked every year. It seems like the age is dropping too. I know two guys that got it in their early 40s. What really sucks is both of the guys that I worked with got it shortly after I did. One was only 46. We worked at a DOE site. They had industrial hygiene check out the two rooms we worked in and they couldnt find anything that would cause it. We used all sorts of crap. MEK, trichloroethane. They claim they can cause cancer, but not prostate. Yeah, I believe them. LOL

This is a good reminder for people here. As a prostate cancer survivor, I can tell you that you need to get checked regularly, especially if there is any family history of the disease. My father was diagnosed in his late 60s, and underwent surgery, which was successful. I started getting checked in my late 40s, and was diagnosed when I was 56. My surgery went well, and its been almost 7 years now-cancer free. I have to go for an annual PSA test, but there haven't been any issues so far. It really is a blessing to be given the opportunity to live a longer life.

My late Dad had prostate cancer and both my older brothers have had it and both in remission almost 10 years after they had the seed procedure. They were diagnosed in their early 50's. I am 60 and get checked every 6 months. Yeah it sucks getting the finger but the alternative is not too appealing either.
The publicity has been on woman's' breast cancer where more men have prostate cancer. I guess that solidifies my opinion that Ta-Tas are better then a mans rear end

They do look better than what always follows behind me.
I kinda wish that I had to only worry about something developing just on the inside of the old back door. I'm still waiting to see what surprises I get from being around certain things overseas the Army exposed me to plus what got passed from my dad from his contact with Agent Orange during his tour in Vietnam.

I hear you loud and clear.
Be well
