hey guys. on my 79 bu the old original a-6 comp has oil being tossed from front shaft seal when engaged and upon disassembling it to replace the seal i found that the clutch plates are ground up good in 3 grooves but it doesn't slipp. the a-6 works just tosses oil. being that the a6 ac comp is a heavy steel tank at 35 lbs(internet no.) i'm examining options to replace it with something else and lighter. the word on the net is that the R4 ac comp is about 17-18 lbs and they came on our mid 80's cars. obtaining the switchover brackets and lines are no problem but if i am going to shell out $175 or so for a new/recon ac comp it had better be better+lighter than whats coming off. i have been reading on the net and found 2 a-6 new style aluminum bodied ac comp (S6,pro6ten,sanden) and a kit to convert to a sanden style compresor. all of which will re-use stock hoses and a-6 mounting brackets or the sanden comes complete in a kit. all 3 comps last listed supposedly weigh 10-17lbs. talking to a couple of ac repair shop guys has found me that the r4 comps are supposed to be "junk" in their words. oh and these other 3 comps are not suppose to suck up power like the old ones(a6,r4) and tug the engine down under load and be more efficient. being that the new options are $300 to $400. my mind has been stuck on this for the last 2 weeks. anyone changeover their ac comps to other than factory?

oh and i ask those who have the short r4 ac comp on their ride with headers. what spacer mods did you have to do for the lower ac comp bracket mount where in stock it went over the cast manifold on number 1 cylinder. the quick look i did at my brothers 84 mc ss didn't look like the bracket would fit over a header primary. so i ask those with headers and stock ac and brackets(r4 type) to send/ post pics of the brackets tying into exhaust bolts by power steering pump. thanks.

opps forgot to add. the places on the net i found these new ac comps for those interested in looking them up as i have. they are classicautoair(S6),oldairparts(PRO6TEN), and nolstagicairparts(sanden style conversion kit).

I personally think the Sanden unit is the way to go. I also haven't heard good things about the R4. If you do go for an R4, don't buy a reman'd unit. I have the A6 in my car. It hasn't worked in a while. They're generally considered "bullet proof". But they're horsepower hogs. When I used to turn my A/C on, it would feel like I was applying the brakes.
I would also consider going with the Sanden compressor.

Here's a pretty good deal on a brand new R4 AC Delco unit, if that's the way you want to go.
