hey guys, I just got my block back from the machine shop and got it on the engine stand. (its gonna be a 383 stroker by the way) I won't start the build till i get enough cash to do it all at once. I live in SD and its humid here. What can i apply to it to prevent the block from getting rust on it.

a good coat of spray lube wd-40, and i'll spray it down atleast once a week, make sure you keep it covered

If you want something that you dont have to keep applying (spray and forget) you should look at LPS 3.It forms a waxy type film that does an excellent job IMO

what we do
b/c were cheap and kinda redneck mabey but its what i was taught and has always worked well for me

coat it down with oil (stp oil treatments really good) and wrap it in plastic

My block is sitting outside with a couple of garbage bags over it. I coated (drowned!!!) the whole block with generic STP on it. Not a bit of added rust since I got it off my nephew's garage floor. It's still gotta be machined anyway.

I'd go with a tub of vaseline. probably the cheapest route to go and it's what we use in northern ontario to prevent salt damage on rims during the winter. Plus, it will stick to anything

nothing to do with the specific question but, before you assemble the engine CLEAN THE sh*t OUT OF THE BLOCK!!!!! i thought i'd cleaned mine enough, even ran rifle brushes through the oil passages, but still had sh*t cut up my bearings some.
other than that, straight oil, something thick, should be fine and you won't need to clean it off before assembly (piston rings don't like wd-40)

thanks guys! really appreciate the help. will keep you posted on the build! for now, here is my Cutty

That is a sweeeet looking Cutlass. And look guys... it's BLACK!!!

Got a question for ya though. Liscense plate says "87 OLDS" yet it has the front end from an 81-86 with 84 (?) grilles. LOL, what year is it?

Car looks good!

I believe he bought the car wrecked and put that nose on it... it is an '87.
Same thing I did with my '87... bought it wrecked and put an '81-'86 nose on it!
