How do you install an air/fuel ratio gauge? Is it possible to install on in a car with no computer?

Yes. It's just like a mechanical oil pressure and coolant temp gauge. Drill a hole in the header collector or downpipe from the manifold, put the plug thing they give you and thread the sensor in.

So it's just an 02 sensor? I ask because all the instructions I've seen show you wiring in an 02 sensor and tying it into the car's computer.

no, you need an controler and the o2 sensor

i own a innovate LC-1 for AFR and the ssi-4 for the tach to record on the Laptop.
(the LC-1 is avaiable with gauge, too)

you can use an Edelbrock

but it has a simple O2 sensor

the innovate uses a wideband sensor, so it is more exact

it depens on what you'll do with the AFR and how much you'll spend

It depends on what type of A/F ratio gauge your looking at. A narrow band is just a gauge and O2 sensor where as a wide band requires a controller as well.

In my opinion, there's almost no use for a narrow band gauge other than telling you when the engine is going rich or lean. You can't really tune with it like you can a wide band which will tell you what your actual A/F ratio is throughout the rpm range.

On my '87 I'm using the AEM single wideband controller and heated O2 sensor. I don't actually have a guage with mine though. I have it controlling my EFI and do all my recording through the laptop.

Torjan, how has your Innovate LC-1 worked out? I ask because everyone I've talked to said they aren't very accurate compared to the other brands out there.

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/ATM-2244/ So I couldn't buy a setup like this with just a gauge? I like the idea of the monitor because it will be easier to mount than another gauge. I'm not looking to have a laptop, the only real reason I want the air/fuel setup is so I can tune my carburetor better. I know my car is running rich at idle, but I'm not sure how it is at highway speeds and under full throttle acceleration.

i haven't a reference but it worked fine for us, much better as the Edelbrock, a friend of mine has a 68 Mustang with 302 and full Edelbrock setup (head/Cam/performer rpm 3" full length headers with true duals AND an Thunder AVS 800 (it was the setup as bought) we're going leaner and leaner, and the car runs better and better but still beeing far to rich. (on WOT ~10 no wonder with the far to big carb)
we used the lc-1 with gauge, but for better annalyse i bought the ssi-4 to record the drive via laptop 😉
it was a very good offer here in germany on ebay.de for 199 Euro (LC-1 with gauge) so zeitronix AEM and other was no alternative. (if someone would like to do the same, i recommend to think about buying a LM-2, nearly same price, more compact and standalone for logging)

That's a narrow band sensor. It won't do you any good for actually tuning your carb. You need a wide band for that.
