I have an old wire that keeps breaking... it's a 10 gauge red wire that goes from the alternator directly to the battery. It appears to have a fuse built into it. Do I have to have this fuse? Or can I just run a new 10 gauge wire?

I would just spend a few extra bucks and put the fuse back in it

I honestly don't recall any "fuse" .... a fusible link is a definate replace. Let me look over my GM Service Manual when I get home .... it is for the 81 but I don't recall any variances with my 86 or 87 (aside from maybe color codes)
