Well, I am not ready to switch to the Libertarian party just yet. We do need some laws, but we need to temper legislation with some common sense and free will. I fear that we will go the way the British have and have cameras everywhere watching our every move and outlaw gun ownership. I fear an Orwellian future where we give up liberty in the name of security. Too many people want to use the government to think for them and anyone they don't like. I agree with the so-called "Religious Right" on the issue of Abortion, but diverge in other areas where it needs to be left to the individual to make their own choices. I believe life begins at conception and that is the only reason I am against abortion. I do not wish to control the lives of others so please leave me alone too!

Some of them want to give illegals driver's licenses, but the dirty little secret is due to "motor voter" laws this would also give non-citizens a voter registration card.

I can't see this happening, especially not in New Jersey.

Two months ago, I went to renew my license. I had with me my soon-to-be-expired license, my social security card, my birth certificate, my bank card and credit cards, bills addressed to me at my house... everything you're supposed to need.

They turned me away -- twice, from two different DMVs -- based on the fact that my birth certificate had the tiniest of stains on it (my old house flooded a few years back and got the 30-ish year old paper mildly moist). I had to get a new one.

If the restrictions stay like that -- and New Jersey is looking to get even MORE strict -- then I can't see how illegals could EVER get a license. And, to that extent, voting rights. At least not in Jersey.

I'm not trying to control anyone's life either; I would also prefer to be left alone most of the time.

I'm also not Libertarian. They are a little too crazy for my taste! That's my point about the beginning of our country. It's not libertarian anarchy or liberal socialism. It's a representative republic that allows the elected leaders to act in our best interest without having to pander because of opinion polls. They do what they think is right and if we don't like it then we vote them out!

What? This government is a representative republic with elected leaders that act in the best interests of remaining in office. These are what we call "Career Politicians" who's main concern is keeping their jobs for another term.

I'm not going to get off on a rant here, but I think that things could be so much better if we had term limits for all elected officials.

Here in michigan they have been talking about issuing DL's to illegal immigrants. I cant grasp that concept since they are here illegaly. Well anyway we should probably get back on topic before it turns into a political war.

I don't see a war here, just a bunch of people on the same page when it comes to most of this. The problem with being against career politicians is that the political process is more geared towards it. It takes money to be elected and it takes a name to get money.

Some in the government have even tried to move towards making dissent more difficult with Mc Cain/Feingold, The "Fairness" Doctrine, and even a move against internet bloggers who have "too many readers". I find the attempts to regulate free speech, especially political speech, dangerous to the future of our country. Yet, the main stream networks say nothing about it. If not for public forums like talk radio and blogs bypassing the mainstream press these measures would not be public knowledge until it was too late. Give me the information, let me see it and I will decide what is and is not relevant. The government does not need to step in to regulate what information I see and how good it is. In a Democracy, that is my job.

Oh, and please, bring on some debate! As long as it is done in a respectful manner this is where it belongs. After all, the internet is not just a place to get free p*rn! It's a great place to express new ideas and opinions. It is here for the free exchange of ideas and commerce. The more debate we have, the more informed we become. Then, we have data to filter to help us make a proper decision.

Im definately interested in politics. I am actually thinking of running for mayor of our town lol. Believe it or not the mayor of this city is only 19 years old. Since most people on this forum seem to have good common since there isnt a whole lot to debate about. If the government was ran off of common since instead of a partys agenda things would be pretty sweet.
