my guage in my 85 cutlass reads way past full all the time does this mean my sending unit is done or could it be something simple like a disconnected wire???

check your ground

awsome thanks for the advise would it be the ground on the guage or the unit itself??? and what would be the easiest way to get at the wire????

I've got the same problem in my '85 Grand Prix. I checked the grounds and it didn't make a difference. Turned out the problem was with the printed circuit board in the instrument cluster.

I'm told you can fix it with the stuff you use to fix broken window defroster wires, but I haven't tried it.

and what would be the easiest way to do that??? and how would i tell if the printed circuit board was the problem

alright well i got a chance to drive my car up on some ramps today, took a look at the wiring for the sending unit and found that my ground definately wasn't connected infact the terminal had rusted right off and the wire was just hangin there so i re-wired it and hoping that my tank is full i believe my guage now works (it was reading well past full before then i connected went and turned the ignition on and it came down a fair bit to almost right at full)
So anyway thank you guys for the help saved me about 70 bucks on a new sending unit. Thanks again
