Here's a good one I couldn't get an answer from my Allstate agent. Why was I going to at fault for filing for a hit & run done at the dealership I left my old truck at when the engine ate itself? It wasn't in my possession & undriveable. Dealership wouldn't take claim case there was no proof it happened there (claimed there was no camera on that spot of the main lot by the building where most of the inventory is parked. :wtf:)

Cool.

No one will write my 1986 GP LE. I won't say its concourse condition, but if I was to insure it the Right Way (eg. not with basic crap that they will total it with a small amount of damage) I would declare it 10k value... but no one will...

Any hints/tips/clues?

Thanks!

Course you had to hit me with the hard questions and the answer is going to suck I’m honestly not sure. State makes a huge difference as well as agents and their staff aren’t licensed as claim adjusters so unless someone happens to have worked that exact situation before we wouldn’t know because we never have a hand in determining fault or otherwise what we are licensed to do and what we do is make sure you understand what your coverage does and does not do.

Also in that situation at least in Florida there is no at fault in that situation it would fall on your collision coverage and you would be Responsible for your deductible. Only because the dealership wouldn’t accept responsibility.

Depends on how you use the vehicle and mileage use. That Situation is literally what places like hagerty are for but because they handle only special cases they have extremely specific underwriting standards. What state are you in?

Illinois.

Its my daily driver, but I really don't do much more than run to work and back. Occasional trip, but I don't buy cars to park in a barn and look at.

Ive had Classic Car insurance with a declared value in the past and drove it all the time.. but that was 20 years ago, so things may have changed, I don't know..

OK here is a question for you.

Im stopped in traffic and get rear ended

Other driver claims he sneezed and floored the gas pedal

His insurgence company sends an appraiser and they total out the car.

The appraisal report comes in they compare it to 3 other similar cars "LOCAL" to my area.

Average sale price of the 3 other cars with higher mileage is 2200-2400.

Two of the cars they compare it to are in another state 70 miles away.

They offer me $1500 minus a $200 salvage fee because i get to keep my totaled car.

So $1300 to me

They call me up and say hey thats a really fair offer so all you have to do is say OK and we will sand you out the check.

I tell them no I dont think thats a good deal and the offer is no where near what the appraisal report states.

So what are my options???

Court???

While I don’t know anything about Illinois insurance the hagerty guidelines I know of don’t allow daily use no matter what.

You could try Chubb or one of the other specialty insurers. Stated, agreed, guaranteed value could all be awesome depending on the specific policy that’s where being an informed consumer and reading the legal Mumbo jumbo comes in because depending on the policy they could potentially only pay acv even though it’s stated value. There is also a chance of an issue based on the specific insurers requirement of proving the number some places require appraisal or bill of sale and have usage limits. For something this specialized you may want to find someone who specializes in this and discuss advice with them maybe contact some specialty insurers to get your questions answered.

If the person you are buying your insurance from won’t take the proper time to answer your questions and explain prior to purchasing the policy I can promise you they won’t take anymore time once you buy or have a claim so keep that in mind when looking.

That’s going to be extremely state specific but one thing you can do is attempt to submit to the adjuster proof of major repairs done recently that would set your vehicle apart you also may have the right to present them with multiple sale postings to attempt to negotiate. Though it’s likely they used out of state and higher mileage because sometimes it’s hard to find the comparable replacements and it sounds like this is a standard ACV policy rather than stated value.

Depending on your insurance policy and local laws you may also have the right to claim on your collision coverage if you have it and have your insurance recover whatever they can from the other insurance company but that’s not common.

Sorry I couldn’t be of more help the biggest issue for me when it comes to claims type questions is in Florida claims and sales are separate licenses and focus on Separate knowledge your insurance sales person is supposed to know how the insurance policy will work and explain if you ask questions then be able to discuss with you what your personal needs are and discuss coverages accordingly.

Due to the fact this issue exists with another insurance it adds a layer of complexity since you are not their insured. Typically speaking at least in Florida suing an insurance company is not worth it unless it’s a very large discrepancy due to cost. The adjuster should provide you with procedures in case you are unhappy with his offer which may include a process for following up the chain culminating in most likely mediation which is typically not as costly as court but can be hit or miss. As much as I hate to say it situations like these typically leave the consumer with a bad taste in their mouth.

I had almost the same situation with my first car when I was 17 and the only reason it didn’t feel so bad is when I bought it back I bought a better body with a blown motor for dirt cheap and swapped my motor into it and then stripped and parted the car before scrapping the rest which definitely helped fill the financial gap but took a lot of time, work and space from me.

Thanks but I'm definitely not involving my insurgence company.

Dont need a mark on it to get an extra couple of buxx, that I'll just have to give them back triple when the rise my rates
