Pretty sure I need one of these, but don't know anything other than "transformer"....

I can make the oil furnace run shorting red and white together. Blower motor works, t-stat lights up. Dual fuel heat pump setup with AC. It's been acting more strange by the day, and it used to reset after pulling the t-stat. Now, no heat or cool.

Does that connect to your thermostat through the small gauge colored wires?

24v out with 120v in?

I have a zone valve setup on a natural gas boiler with hot water. The transformer drops to 24v ac and then it goes to the thermostat which just closes the circuit and feeds power to the burner and pump.

It's likely a 120v ac to 24v ac power supply or transformer

Correct. The troubleshooting is the bjtch. I tried replacing the t-stat, but that did nothing. 8 wire colors, 10 terminals, and 65 different letter designations is enough to drive me nuts.
Red&white =aux heat/ oil furnace
Green =fan
Blue=24v
Black=outdoor temp
Orange= reversing valve (magic)
Yellow= is interuppted by the condensate pump (more magic)

Take the cover off that box and take a pic of the inside.

Looked at the pics closer again. It looks like the gray box should only have electrical connections inside.

Another transformer?
