So, there is somebody local to me that is parting out a 2005 GTO and he will sell me his entire rearend assembly for $500  also a guy selling a C4 IRS assembly for $650 8)

Has anybody here ever fabricated or attemped to fabricate an Independent Rear Suspension into a full framed car :?: Any input or suggestions :?:

I would guess that the late GTO is way too wide. I think a C3 Corvette or a Jag would be a better donor.

there was a thread on here a while ago w/ a link to a restoration site. They restomoded a GP 2+2 and put irs in it. iirc it was from a vette

Have you browsed around on Pro-touring.com? I have a feeling some of those guys have done it.

Also, I would look at Roadster Shop and their chassis for ideas.

Finally, this is a car for sale locally in my area. I know nothing about it, or even that it works, but looks kinda neat. He says its a Cadillac rear suspension. 1972 Buick Skylark.

I remember reading something about that Grand Prix. Wish I could find that article again

Putting a Jaguar rear end in will involve a lot of chassis mods, and it is heavy as well.

They were very popular in the British custom car scene, a shiny jag unit looks great if it's on display.
But there are better systems available for your requirements IMO.

Roger.

I had not heard of anyone putting an IRS in one of these cars. Not saying it's never been done before. I did read on TGO(thirdgen.org) of a guy that put a Corvette IRS in his 3rd gen. It looked really good after it was completed.

...but the driveshafts can be cut down, if needed
That is true. Some designs are better suited for this than others though. After looking at some pics of a GTO assy it looks more involved than that. The width of the trailing arms would make it a tough unit to narrow. I believe that the wheel bolt pattern is different too so that will mean mismatched wheels front to back. My boss runs a Jag in the rear of his Cobra kit car and it really is a pretty slick install. It's fairly compact and the inboard brakes reduce unsprung weight. I have a C3 rear that's going in my '35 Ford and it will probably get converted to coilovers but could be installed as-is. The advantages to these is that the width is close and they are self contained. You don't need to fabricate upper spring pockets like the GTO will require. Any IRS will require a ton of fabrication. I guess it's up to the installer to decide how much time and money they want to spend to avoid having a lame FWD offset track width...unless you like that look. I could see the actual cost for the GTO being 2-3X that of a Corvette or Jag by the time you're done.
