I guess it comes down to budget. There are some units out there that can be fitted. Heidts makes one.

I have put Corvette and my more recent project a Jag irs in a Pinto.

The Vette was tough, drove well but you are a little limited on how much back spacing the wheel can have. They do make some offset trailing arms now. The brakes are outboard and easy to service. You can remove the leaf spring and run coilovers if you fab them in.

The Jag was cheap to be had in a local pick a part type yard. I got mine for 75 dollars each complete on half price days. Once you strip the cradle off the weight goes away. The brakes are inboard so they are harder to service. I ran cooling tubes to mine so they would not overheat during the thrashing. The quad shocks can be converted to double coilovers. There are companys that will make halfshafts any length and they can be tough with bigger u joints. Its the same rearend they used in the OG Cobras. The bolt pattern is chevy already. You can find cross members that make putting them in between the rails super easy.

A lot of guys that really hammer on their cars dont usually go the Jag route since there is no upper control arm. If a ujoint fails the only thing holding the thing together is the lower control arm.
