Was just curious if anybody has used one yet was kinda thinkin about tryin to set my 455 up with one but I dont know if id be better off with a different kind of cam to make more power but I love an engine that slobbers all over itself but runs good. So I figured maybe it had what I was looking for.

From everything I have heard Thumpers are made for sound, not so much power. I will never understand why someone would run a Thumper when theres so many others that sound good and serve their intended purpose at the sametime. Try the Xtreme Energy series from Comp Cams.

Running good and noisy lope don't go together 😛 I agree with 83montess, try a cam made for power and not sound. You can get a healthy cam with some lope and performance.

I don't see why something like this cam wouldn't performance well http://www.compcams.com/Company/CC/cam- ... d=217&sb=0

Granted, you can probably get a more "street friendly" cam with the same lift/duration. That center line/lobe seperation is whats going to give it that "thump". May have vacuum issues with something like that though

From what I understand, the Thumper cams were originally designed for people who wanted to be emissions compliant, but still sound like they have a big cam.

If you're not too worried about fuel economy, just get a longer duration cam that naturally sounds rowdy because it is! There are a few advantages to valve overlap that almost make it worth doing, for a weekend cruiser/occasional dragster.

I personally prefer an engine that starts immediately, runs effortlessly, has instant throttle response, and has smooth and broad low end torque. Add the right exhaust to get the sound you want.

Thanks for the info guys. Im trying to make a bad *ss street machine that I can drive on the street and still throw some slicks on it and take it to the track on the weekend and still run in the 10's in the 1/4 mile. I have an olds 461 thats got about 450 hp right now. The cam i have in it right now i found out is just a regular every day cam so Id like something thats gonna be more performance. My heads are stock heads that have been ported some so I figured I could get a good cam and my heads could handle it for now till I can afford to get the heads I really want.

Running a 10 second quarter mile is a tall order. You will need a very good flowing set of heads and a considerably large camshaft. You will have to push some serious horsepower out of that Olds. It is definitely completely doable, with some money

I'd agree with the others to not just consider its name or given idle characteristics. But, i wouldn't say they all don't perform well though. The cam posted above actually would very nicely on some cars as the overlap can seriously improve cylinder filling.
