Im looking to see whats going on with our engines. What you guys have upgraded to, parts, knowlege, experience you may have. Any dealers or websites you know or have. Please share.

Im really interested to know any secrets tips and tricks you guys have. I will be building the engine within the next month or two and would like to hear more before I start.

If you have one and dont know anything about it and dont care at least bump the thread to show some support.

So far i know Im looking for a cam starting today. I may end up having to get a custom grind at the machine shop. I will stay posted.

Thanks guys, Roy

You can do a search on the 301. Honestly short story is just like that of the Olds 307 not that you can't do anything with it just that you will always get a lot more for the same money by buying a larger engine and doing a swap. The mounts work for the Pontiac 326, 350, 389, 400, 421, 428, 455 all of which respond to the same basic mods much better and are a better not just a bigger engine to rebuild or modify.

Well I don't know much about it... But they made a Trans Am with a turbocharged 301. So if you wanted some extra power maybe you could get the turbo setup off of one of those. Only use a Holset turbo and intercooler off a Cummins diesel or a big Garret off a Powerstroke/7.3 DT466 international since they're cheap and common, and a big improvement to the old school turbo that would be on there originally. Pry make quite a bit of power...

I don't know much about Pontiacs, but I do know one thing. Like the guy above me said, the 301 was never considered a great motor... And you would be better off going to a bigger better engine if you're serious about going fast. They're cheap and plentiful too, so it wouldn't be hard or hit your wallet to bad. I see Pontiac engines all the time on Craigslist. They made a real nice one in the old Firebirds 400ci I think 360 or 375 horse 4 barrel, or a 389 tri power out of a GTO would be bad *ss. 8)

(Then put the turbo on it. )

Thanks for the input guys.

Im keeping the car as original as possible. Not looking for hp just seeing whats out there, if anything. I want a cam and that may be it if I can get away with that and a stock rebuild.

Definatly no interest of a turbo but thanks for the suggestions. I want the wild nasty lobeing sound from the cam. Turbo is like a muffler and You would never know I had a cam.

Please read my intro thread to get an idea of my plans.

Thanks man. Havent looked at the links yet.

What do you mean by undriveable? I can and will build the engine for the cam if I have to. and also get a torque converter reflashed or built. Please let me know

Just read the links, esp the second one.

Probably will not have mufflers. Mufflers change the direction of the exaust flow making it quiter and building restriction. Since its a 79 i think I can run straight pipes in VA. I can use the pipes to balance flow and build velocity with different sizes and shapes throughout.
