Ok..I just read the July issue of Super Chevy and they built a 362hp 305 with mainly a cam and head upgrade. Now...I know it's more cost effective and what not to build a 350, but I currently have a very good running 305HO, and it's already got long tube headers, Edelbrock Performer Air Gap Intake, and an Edelbrock 750cfm Quadrajet. I recently just purchased this cam and lifter kit and have it sitting brand new in my garage:

So...what I'm wondering...is number 1, is this cam going to be good for what I want? Which is going to be a good, strong street motor ( won't ever see track time, just a good cruiser for the summer) and have a nice sounding lope at idle.

And Number 2, if this cam will work well, what would be a decent set of heads to consider that would match well?

I figure as the motor sits now, with the mods I already have...maybe around 250hp, do you think it's feaseable to get to 350hp with different heads and the right cam?

I have a feeling that cam will be a little on the large side for stock 305 heads. You'd probably be better off with a set of Vortecs if you're on a budget, but then you'd need a new intake. If you could find a set of used aftermarket heads, or some L98 heads you'd likely be better off. 305s can make power if you build them right, but most of the time they don't have the torque that makes a street car fun to drive. I believe I remember a build that was basically identical to my 350 (stock Vortec heads, Comp XE268H, stock short block), power was nearly the same but torque was down (350 put out 377hp, 305 was near it but at least 50lbs. less torque). Your carb is way more than the engine needs too, you probably don't need much more than a 600 on a 305, unless you're turning some serious RPM. I have a 600 on my 350 and it runs great for its size.

I've heard good things about the 268 cam, so with vortec heads, what intake would you reccommend? Also, I was looking at a 600cfm vacuum secondary carb from Edelbrock, can't remember the p/n right offhand but what do you think of that combination?

I'm not sure I paid that much for it, but yes, that's the kit. I have a GMPP dual plane (no EGR, square bore carb flange) on mine, with an Edelbrock 600 (1405/1406, difference is one is manual choke, other is electric). It runs pretty good, I think I'd like to try a Q-Jet though so the primaries will be a little smaller & help out on gas mileage. It seems to pull about 12" of vacuum, so the cam still does good on the street for a daily driver. The cam is even 50-state legal on engines '92 and older 😀

Would the comp xe268 cam be too big for the stock heads? Also, where is the best place to maybe find the L98 heads...like what vehicles/motors had them?
