Horse pucky! Never seen it happen.

Here's what happens: the amplifier power "doubles" (for sake of argument) and the THD goes up. You have the same volume, but don't have to turn it up as loud on the knob. The amp isn't going to overheat to the point of shutting off unless you have it full blast, engine off, in the middle of summer, for an extended period (several hours).

I’ve never seen it happen either. Running a four ohm speaker with a factory stereo will not be a problem. I’ve been doing it In two of my vehicles for several years now without issues. those alpine 6 x 9’s look real nice and I’m sure they sound better than the factory speakers. Up until the last 10 years, speakers are an area that OEMs have really ignored and have tried to save money.
