I just picked up my 1971 cutlass s 8.5 corprate rear end today ,and had a few questions and concerns about it , everywhere i searched the internet for info said the axle id # should be on the pass side axle tube cant find if cleaned it off still cant find and it moves freely but iti hold it by the yoke and spin it it only spins about two full rotations before it clicks and locks .?..? Took cover off and read ring gear it said 671 in white greese marker and the stamping said 41a15. Gm. Ap 246. 1. Tryed to look these up on oldsmobile site cant find anything on it does it make, sence tomanyone here.

41 divided by 15 gets you 2:73 rear gears. Any broken teeth?

Yes draining helps, but don't touch the carrier for no reason. GM stamped both the ring and pinion gears with the two teeth counts. The ring gear you found already, the pinion is marked on the face. You need to find why it's stopping as it should turn smoothly with no issues. Are the brakes locking up, pinion shaft sticking out, debris in there getting caught up, or what? Drain it, spray some solvent in there, get it clean, look for debris or other reasons. DON'T disassemble anything yet!

Thanks ive never delt with a rear end before so this is all new to me ,the brake drums are off and really not that bad it was kept in a garage .it makes a clicking noise almost like a emergency brake .?
