dont think its a posi. i spun one wheel and the other wheel went the opposite way.

that is a non post then. the unit is worth good money regardless if it is posi or not. If the junkyard doesnt know what it is it should be cheap, good working posi units with good gears can command 1000 dollars as factory units

Re: At the yard.

What car would have a posi in it that i can get it out of. I can swap it out at the yard and there would be a posi unit right there. Any info as to what cars i can check. Ive never worked on a rear end before so im thinking of just swapping it without any adjustment or anything. i can do it the right way at home.

I think grand nationals may be the only gbodies it is a guaranteed posi. I dont think monte SS's and 442's are guaranteed to have them. somebody might be able to pipe in here, but that 8.5 rear is worth the time and money purely from an investment standpoint if you just wanted to get it to resell

Re: At the yard.

looks like an 8.5 rear end there.. Man I got to a yard and I see sway bar and 8.5 if I aint get the cash money , I whipping out Credit card !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just to clarify, Monte SS did not ever come with an 8.5 rear as original equipment. And Peter is correct, they did not all have posi. GNs did not all have it either. Former employer had an 86 that did not.

And yes, if it is an 8.5 pull it. Always a good market for them

Re: At the yard.

Okay. I might just pull it if its an 8.5. So there are no other rear end posi units that I can pull the guts out of to replace with? Ill reference the Axel identification thread to find out whats in it. Lets see what tomorrow brings.

there is plenty of aftermarket support for 8.5 posi-carriers to my knowledge and perhaps some second hand carrier options but that'll take a little digging

Re: At the yard.

Can he not use a posi carrier from any other car that has a 8.5? I believe the bubble caprices & the like had 8.5 rears..the carrier should work..the rear end won't bolt into a gbody but the posi carrier should work. Others will chime in on this.

Re: At the yard.

True, other GM vehicles used 8.5 rears, but it's hardly what I'd call an in-the-junkyard swap if there's any chance of it living.

Lots of trucks have 8.5 rears, but they're the gov-loc units.

I'd think that late 70s Z 28 Camaros would likely be the most common source for the units, unless for some odd reason Police Caprices were equipped with them..in dry San Antonio?

Either way, the units will likely need a thorough going through to be usable. Like was said, lots of aftermarket support

Re: At the yard.

well ill be going in a bit. decided not to try and tackle any type of swap at the yard because i dont want to bit off more than i can chew lol. if its an 8.5 ill take it and when i get the funds, ill have it built or something. in the meantime, itll just be sitting under my cutlass since im not driving it at the moment. thanks for the input guys.
