Ever since I've had my 78 regal the fuel gauge has been stuck on 1/4 of a tank. Every time I removed the gauge and put it back in the it would move back to the exact spot. So the other day I seen the wire coming from the fuel sending unit and disconnected it and the gauge showed a full tank and when I reconnected it it moved back to 1/4 a tank. So my question is is this the float on the fuel sending unit causing this. And if so how hard is to swap out the fuel sending unit? Can I tackle it by myself because I would hate to run out of gas in our high school parking lot.

Sounds like the sender is bad, also check the ground wire that connects to the body next to the tank, it is very easy to change the sending unit, unhook the two (maybe three) hoses, undo the two wires and then take the two bolts out for the straps. Use a floor jack to support the tank, use something brass or aluminum to turn the ring on the sending unit so it doesn't spark

Thanks a lot that's my next project imma tackle while I'm out on break
