Frustrating day, but the end is near. Trying to close out the late MIL's estate, just a few more steps to go, but everything is so trying. Probate court is not the easiest thing to deal with. Just spent over $425 in Fed Ex shipping charges for her quirky but expensive doll collection to be shipped out to my niece last week. 13 friggin' boxes of nothing but dolls!! (It was in the will, so had to do it). It was kinda like shipping car parts, so it wasn't terrible. But time consuming.

But it's coming to the end. Also, finally mailed out the last of the receipt/release/waiver forms. Hopefully everyone signs them and returns them. Can't make them do it, but there should be no reason they don't. If not, that'll be one more step to deal with next month because there's one last thing to do if they don't sign the waivers. Probate set to close up end of March. Can't get here fast enough. Funny, my wife is the personal representative (executor) and I'm doing most of the work. There's a reason nobody should ever get good at being an executor. Made some mistakes along the way but got them sorted out. One of the things we learned is not every debt needs to be paid with the same importance. Like credit card balances and stuff? It's like, oh well dude, just wait until the end and see if there's anything left for you. Some of them just write it off. Some threaten to go with collection agencies. Go for it. NO ONE but the decedent is responsible for paying credit card debts or unsecured loans as long as there's no co-signer or you live in one of those community debt states where your spouse may get your debt when you pass. But in any case, pack sand credit card dudes.

One of her pension checks was deposited like 2 days after she died, and when we notified them about it they were like, don't worry about it. We'll just cut it off next month. That was nice of them.

Oh, GET AN ESTATE BANK ACCOUNT with its own tax ID. Do that asap. Then, any money coming in from sales or insurance checks, etc., after the date of death can be deposited in there. And pay out from that account when possible. It'll make final accounting easy peasy. Or at least easier.

So...….dinner time. PIZZA HUT! Good to have a 50% coupon deal. You can try and get one too until Sunday. Just put "JANHALFOFFPIZZA" for the coupon code. At least around here it works. $9.14 plus tax for a large Super Supreme!

Pizza good.

Probate was my bread and butter at the last firm I worked at until about... 2015 or so. Theres lots of deadlines and paperwork to keep track of, but, once you learn the process it actually isn't too bad. There are some scary provisions, at least in GA, for an exec/admin who makes mistakes though if heirs/creditors want to be dicks about it - innocent or not.

I've found the experiences varies HUGELY based on the judge of a particular county. Some wind their clerks up tight to the point of making things harder than intended and send you away without saying exactly what was wrong. Others practically re-fill out new versions of forms for pro-se parties who messed up, real time, right at the counter. It really is luck of the draw, sadly.

It's somewhat understandable when you look at the potential for abuse in the system, but does make things harder in an already difficult time all too often.

March 5th and I can begin closing my father's estate. In the meantime we hold our breath and pray no more claims roll in. Gotta love being thrown into this @$$h0le first with zero knowledge. I feel your pain.
