Big ford old style vs new style housing ends

I am trying to figure out what the big difference is between the big ford old style and big ford new style housing ends for a 9in. I know that the old style is 1/2" and the new being 3/8". Other than that does anyone know of any other difference or which housing end would be the better way to go. Thanks.

That is a very good place to buy things, they are located here in Lincoln, I remember when they use to be just a little store on the corner of 19th and O st. My how they have grown, I think I own part of that place with all the stuff I have bought from them over the years
