Hi there, just wondering if anyone has ever blacked out all the chrome trim on a 2-door Cutlass. I've seen it on a few four-doors and some wagons before, looks good on them, but I'd like to see what a 2-door looks like. I'm contemplating paint for my Cutlass and had decided on black, so the final question is on chrome. If you have any pictures of these cars with black trim that would be great, thanks.
Definitely, but it won't be shiny or glossy, just flat black. It would be a rattlecan job but at least it would look better than faded, missing paint and rust
I once saw a satin black GN/T-Type on here...looked really good. Thought about doing that to my ride, or another cutlass. Painting the trim never seems to last long, from what Ive seen. Powder coat seems to be the best option for trim IMO.
I clear coated my GP matte dusk blue before Mercedes and BMW had the option of a matte clear. Guys have been painting their cars flat black but I wanted something different. I panted it matte after seeing a matte car in a picture from way back when, Funny how things from history repeat itself
Black is a good color but it still doesn't make up for good bodywork. Make sure you're really ready for paint. If I were you I wouldn't paint the door trim. It usually only looks good for like a year and then it looks really bad. If you do paint the door trim use matte like they already said. Consider doing test pieces like the hood / trunk or trim off a junker just to see whats up before you commit to anything permanent. If I were you I would skip the trim painting and box up all the door chromes and just get fillers off gbodyparts to eliminate the lower mouldings and keep the upper chrome stock. You'd be surprised how good it can look w/ the right polish and a little bit of wheel action stock...
A better plan than doing expiriments w/ your stock trim mouldings is to box and label them w masking tape and straight up buy another set in decent shape to play w/ first so you don't have any regrets! I did this w/ a set of tail lights and glad I didn't mess up my original pair.
I'll be removing all the trim, I've already removed the badges, I just thought they looked kinda dumb. I'm going to paint it to hopefully attract a buyer once I'm ready to sell...the people in this little town are easily fooled by an "old" car with decent paint and nice wheels
I have always painted my chrome trim on all my gbodies knowing I would not go back to chrome at any time.
I first would scuff them up with a Scotchbrite pad and then clean them good and then spray on an adhesive promoter and then I would always apply low gloss black engine enamel (satin works also) which looks pretty close to factory. This year I tried SEM trim paint on my new windshield trim but really it does not look any different from my engine paint, either way I have never had any durability issues with painting trim.
