Hey guys. Dumb queation here. My monte has black smoke comin from the exhaust and im just curious if this is a normal thing or do i have something seriously wrong?

carb is dumping fuel or your choke is on. It's not a major problem to fix but you need to before the fuel washes the cylinder walls

TBI is over my head so hopefully someone will jump in that knows about TBI....you might want to include TBI in your title to get some attention

Check the coolant temp. sensor (often called CTS). They're known to go bad, and sometimes tell the computer it's -40 degrees out, so it dumps a ton of fuel in.

There is a resistance range for testing the sensor, but I'm not sure what it is.

X2, Had the same thing with some Peugeots and BMWs over here. BTW have you checked the dumb things?, could be a clogged air filter. Don't laugh, I've come across this before.

Funny thing is... several weeks ago one of the guys at work did some stuff on a customer's '00s Impala (2004 or so), it came back within a half hour with no power, and would only rev to 2500-3000rpm. Turns out she sucked up a plastic bag that covered the air filter, you could see the intake hose collapse every time you gunned the throttle  Pulled the bag out and she was good to go.
