I now have by 79 monte shell up on the rotisserie ready to bring down to bare metal and start welding and bodywork.
I have been through the horror stories of sandblasting and have seen first hand the damage it can do ( dropped a mint door off at local sandblaster to have it returned ruined beyond repair )
This will be the second time i have stripped the body, the first time it was still on the frame and i used a combination of chemical stripper, wire brushing and sanding over countless hours. The underbody and trunk is caked with rubberised undercoating, the interior is primed and painted while the exterior is currently sitting in sealer.
I have a 7.5hp compressor putting out 25cfm @ 90psi. I was planning to get a pressure pot sandblaster and have at her, seal with epoxy primer and then grind away as needed when doing metal work.
I have read it's less of a risk to use a home shop blaster vs an industrial one??
I will scrape off as much of the undercoating and seam sealer as possible prior to blasting.
Need to know
- Recommendations on a good pressure pot blaster
- which media to use, and where to use it if different areas on the body are better for different media?
- Psi range and other tips to avoid warpage
- Can i blast the whole body or better to stick to just the firewall, interior and underbody?
- Seal with Epoxy primer or Etching primer? i have a gallon of etching i would like to use up if i can then lay epoxy over as a sealer ontop of bondo and such prior to topcoat.
Help and experience appreciated, thanks.
