Thinking of adding some bolt on stainless exhaust tips to the stock exit locations behind the rear wheels.......any suggesttions or strong opinions one way or the other...............i dont see many 442s with the tips

if they're behind the tires they'll get dirty and eventually the dirt and debris from the road will ruin the polish on them. personally i dont like tips because it's one more shiny thing you have to keep clean and polished or they'll just get ugly and ruin the look of the car and nothing is worse than ugly dirty polished parts.

if you like cleaning and polishing go for it. i'd rather spend my time doing other things with my car.

I dont like bolt on tips because most of the time the clamps are left showing and look tacky. Also theres more parts to rust. I went with weld on tips and I wouldnt change them if I had to go back. If you get weld on ones make sure you can weld though

I put on a chrome exhuast tip becuase the guy who had the car first put on a really ugly *ss pipe so to get it stock lenght I had to put his tip on... I think it looks great it matches the rest of the chrome on my car.

also at the local auto store they cost like 5-10 dollars so every season I can just buy a new tip if it starts to get ugly looking

I spent just over $30 for both of my tips from Summit last winter. I havent had to clean them since and show no signs of rust. I think the best bet for something you dont wanna have to keep replacing is to spend alittle more money and get a quality pice instead of a cheap piece from a chain auto store.

Those are mine brand new .. and they still look the same all I ever do is whipe them off with a wet rag and chrome is good as new.

What ever tickles your pickle I guess 8)

Bolt on tips rust out in 1 season - that goes for the ones @ advanced auto or higher end flowmaster tips either way. Auto-zone I'd bet even less than a year bc I've had bad exp w their parts. The expensive flowmaster tips that went to live in New Mexico on my Cutlass somehow still rusted @ the bolts. That being said, if you have a cheap exhaust kit to begin w/, buying the square-ended bolt on tip / or the chevy bow-tie and installing it @ an angle or backwards can produce a desirable exhaust note & if you use large bolts too then the exhaust will have a whistling noise in it. The whistling noise sounds similar to a turbo/ SC and scares deer away

YES on the tips and WELD them on! My Chrome one's lasted 5 years and I live in NY in the woods no garage. The chrome stood up to everything!

I then replaces my exhaust and got new tips and they polish up nice but not as nice as the ones you see in my pic. If I was putting the car into shows I would go back to where I had the custom exhaust done in the Bronx at MAXIMO's! He made magic happen!

".....YES on the tips and WELD them on!....."

X2

If I use tips, I try to get the stainless steel ones that are a slip fit over the stock exhaust pipe (not the one size fit's all crap). I then usually just hold them on with a couple of small tack welds, unless I'm using a hanger and clamp where they fit...in that case I usually turn the clamp unside down so you don;t see the hardware.

I'm not really into chrome tips on exhaust mainly because I'd rather keep everything tucked up and mostly out of sight as far as exhaust goes.
On the right car they can look good especially if you have a lot of chrome and if I did use tips they would be weld on polished stainless steel and they would have to be only slightly larger than the existing tailpipe and definitely not something like a 4" tip on 2.5" tailpipe.
I would try to set the exhaust up so hopefully the only part of the tailpipes you can see would be the tip.
When I can stand next to a car and look down at a tailpipe and see the back end of the tip where it was welded or clamped on to me looks totally off.
