Ours should clear an 8.8 with no trouble. I don't know that we have ever tried it but I do know we designed the bar around a 9" housing so it clears a 9" and the 8.5 rear end with plenty of clearance. So I would see no reason why an 8.8 wouldn't clear.
The 79 Monte Carlo should have the same sway bar as all 78-88 G-Body cars.
