Ive decided the low buck route on my 1986 Buick Limited. Ive decided to do a retro rat rod theme with it. Ive got a nice crappy flat black paint job on it already and the stock steel wheels have been painted red. Still need to acquire some chrome beauty rings, have my custom made wide white walls installed, get some chrome lug nuts, heat the springs(remember low budget build here), maybe do a little body work and little more paint work, and some odds and ends here and there. This is a daily driver and I want to have fun with it, I cant drive the GNX-SS project everyday as it was built to be a show car, track car, occasional warm weather use car. It doesnt have heat, air, or wipers. So very limited on its use. So the rat rod is just for a fun cruiser, conversation piece. Not trying to win awards, just want a neat ride to take to shows, drive whereever and not have to worry about getting dinged and scratched. Ill have some preliminary pics posted up later today.

A couple of pics of what Ive got to work with here so far. Dont know if Im going to use the wide white walls or stick with the skinny white walls yet, Ill have to see. Anyway, heres a couple of pics

Seems like a fun project. Feel the same with my cutlass sometimes, want to drive something else occasionally so I don't have to worry about dents...

I thought you were putting those wheels on the GNX-SS for a second there

I would never do that to the GNX-SS lol, although it is hard to discern them from one another due to the similarities in paint. That car sits underneath a car cover all the time. I try to start it every two or three days and let it get to operating temperature. I havent driven it anywhere in about two months, not even out of the driveway.

love the idea! 😛

a rat rod has got to have wide whites, if it's got whitewalls at all!

I'd go with the wide whites too. And I'd rather cut the springs than heat them.

cutting the springs though, involves removing springs, Ive never had an issue with heated springs as long as you do it right, which Im sure someone will call an oxymoron. Ive got another buick to tear the suspension out of and start anew, dont want to have two to do it to.

When I swapped the springs on my wagon, all I did was remove the brake caliper and rotor, then I just popped the lower ball joint loose and let everything hang. It would've worked out perfect if I hadn't wrecked one of the grease boots with the pickle fork and one of the zerks with the floor jack... oh well.
